how to clean a new tank
I need advice as I have had a new tank made but its full of alloy swarf & metal fillings
ive vacuumed out as much as I can I have a bung in the bottom do I try to flush it out or is there better way water blastering is out rob **)**)**) |
Good or bad, I did the best I could, then added a pre filter to my fuel filter. I'll throw it away after the first few miles.
Also the BF pump I'm using has a mesh like filter inside, as it has the swirl pot inside |
You could put some kerosene and a few nuts in the tank and shake it around. That will knock some swarf of.

hopefully rog246 is joking , but we use a mild form of acid to clean the tanks we make at work, this will test all the welds aswell, to make sure there are no leaks, if there is black slag on or in the welds you need to get rid of it as it will clog up filters eventually.

I will have a look on monday and talk to our tradies about the ratios, I am pretty sure we get the cleaning acid from BOC or the local welding supply shop.

I wouldn't be putting acid or alkali near it. The other day i accidently put an alloy meat mallot in the dishwasher and it came out covered with a black oxide residue. Just wash it out with soapy water. I doubt you will get every last bit out, but the pre filter on the pump will stop it getting in the fuel system.
I used plain water for mine. There was only stainless steel swarf in it and since it was clean it didn't stick to the tank. I heated it with a heat gun to dry it out. |

I put some kero & my nuts in but it hurt to much so I stopped eheheh I tried it & got a bit out. so soapy water & a hair dryer is next thanks all rob |
i think diesel fuel has good cleaning agents in it so maybe even try it
atleast when u fill tank up with fuel the diesel will slowly come out as it gets mixed in |
Hi Rob, spoke to the boys at work, acetone is what they use to clean the alloy tanks, gets the residue off the alloy and also any black in the welds, the mild acid is for the stainless tanks.

I found out sunday that a friend works at a radiator repair mob so for a couple of bourbons it was cleaned & flushed thanks again rob |
