Cost of Engineering
Hi
I know it is a very broad question - but what is the 'ball park' figure to expect to pay to get engineering approval for a kit? I am in Tas which is another variable - but what have people paid? $1,2,5,10k??? Is it something you get as a quoted price or is it 'do and charge'? **) |
Very state dependant. Most engineers that do icv will give a price indication up front. If they cant, then they probably dont have much experience in the process and you dont want to pay them to learn. Different states have different requirements for testing and paperwork so you really want to only go off the relevant one for your state. Do you work of the Vic system?
Get list and call around is best option as you will get other builders talking $500 to $5000. The engineer I started with in nsw said up to $10k and charged me $750 for the initial meeting! Needless to say I didn't stick with him, he was a crook. |
As Zedn mentioned it is best to call to get a current quote.
I would recommend Stephen Caplice, see the link below for list of approved engineers in Tassie. I would expect that most travel. Transport: Engineering Signatories |

Think I recall paying something like $2K for my engineering which is reasonable given the certification and testing they have to do and check. But as said it will vary between States and testers I am sure. And you may simply be limited by the number of suitable testers you can access in Tassy anyway as I now note by the link in the previous email but you should be able to manage on this. Good luck |
If you try and get a local-ish kit, the kit supplier should be able to point you in the right direction to a good one/one familiar with his brand. Or at least familiar with ICV's.
I had a quote from an engineer here for "upwards of 15k, probably closer to 20-25k" :O who wanted to retest a bunch of things that had already passed because he thought some of the wording was not quite right and the certs were done over 10 years ago. Needless to say I'm not using him! If you can use the engineer that the kit manufacturer originally used, that's probably the best and cheapest bet. Edit: I'm expecting to pay around 2k for mine to be engineered in QLD |
I was quoted about $1500-$2000 here in Vic, for a kit known to the engineer.

Hi all,
Thanks for the rough idea. Nothing to die in a ditch over! Good... Thanks Craig for that name too, a good start. Cheers Tony |
Thanks for the tip Craig - I spoke with Steve and he seemed like a good guy to deal with. He had experience with a local RCR SLC, and he said he was very impressed with the paperwork you supplied with that car.
He said emissions were the biggest hurdle and a crate motor should address any issues there. Ball park $1000 odd was his suggestion, so I can add that to the budget! Cheers Tony |

It would be great if it was only that much - he said the authorities here are good to deal with.
Just another bonus of living way down here! Well - the economy aside!! Quote:

Mind you, you probably pay more for postage on parts.
