oil pressure gauge test
just wondering if some one has a quick test for oil pressure senders
ive tested the wiring to the gauge,, checked power at the gauge ok problem is I have oil pressure at the pump on the motor but not at the gauge im only turning it over by key at this time !!ready for first fire up so how do I check the sender all ideas a great help thanks again rob :CRY::CRY: |
Rob, Tap a hose fitting into one of the oil gallery plugs on the side of the motor (or anywhere else in your oil system).
Then use a garden weed sprayer filled with a couple of litres of oil to pressurize the oil system. Serves as a good way to pre-oil an engine that's been sitting for a while and allows you as much time as you need to check out things like gauges etc. |
Hi Rob,
Can you give some more info. LS1 using what ECM? What gauges? How is the gauge sender wire routed, discreet one wire direct to the sender or via the ECM? |
im running a standard ecm off the donor car & been done to suit stand alone
gauges have only 1 wire to the sender all gauges are vdo with matching senders that are vdo as well I,m wondering if it could be the thread seal insulating it from earth |
With your VDO oil gauge, does gauge go full scale if the sender wire is disconnected while the ignition is on?
If so, 0 ohms if be zero oil pressure and about 250 ohms would be full scale. If you have any doubt on the electric gauge, I would fit a mechanical workshop gauge prior to fire up. I fitted another oil pump on a VE last Thursday after it developed no oil pressure at another shop while having a service (oil and filter change). Pressure relief valve stuck open in the pump. |
hahahahaha
don't u know ls1s run fk all oil pressure go buy a holden workshop manual and they recommend 7 to 15 psi oil pressure at idle which is funny anyway to test the gauge turn on ign then just earth out the wire at the sender if its an aftermarket gauge get someone to look at yr gauge and it will go to high then quickly remove the wire from earth as if u leave it on too long u can burn gauge out sometimes just cranking an engine may take afew minutes to get pressure make sure battery is cranking super fast so maybe jump start it and remove spark plugs too as it helps or like ive done in the past after trying for an hour or so just start the bloody thing if it doesn't get oil pressure in 5 seconds turn it off |
Rob,
I am not all that familiar with your engine setup but I used VDO guages in my Cobra when I was racing and if your sending unit screws into a port and you used teflon tape or any type of insulation, that will stop the unit from working. All the above answers are good and should give you a good starting point. We found the tape issue when 3 of the other people's Cobras suddenly had no oil pressure and they had changed the sending units. I never used anything on mine so I never had a problem, and once the tape was removed, theirs worked ok. Ron |
Gauge wont show pressure at cranking speed.
Fire it up and watch the needle move after a second or 2. |
Hi Rob,
I was in the same boat very recently, gauge testing showed a deflection on the gauge as per above, but nothing would show up during cranking. So f#%k it I said, let's hit the key and go for a start, and see what happens. And carefully watching during the start, I saw instant pressure within say 3 seconds. Very relieved to say the least as I was just about to shut it off. I know it was not officially primed, but the motor had been run before (ex-crate engine), and it turned over real nice and easy, so I took the leap of faith being prepared to stop quickly if no pressure showed up. It turned out ok. |
JIM i.ll try the earth out first as I did try it first time without plugs & anew odessy battery
RON 64 yep ill remove all thread seal as well BOXHEAD dave I have not fired it yet as I have on exhaust yet & I thought it needed o2 sensors to run this is my first computered motor!!! so more stupid questions coming thanks for all the ideas ROB |
It's hard to decide which way to go
Start and hope for pressure Or keep cranking As a mechanic we could not waste hours trying to get oil pressure so after half an hour wasted most of the times we would have to start engine And over the past decade wiring engines maybe two or three out of couple hundred have not had oil pressure |
