Wiring clearance from headers

I've just about finished wiring up my engine. The harness that runs to the starter is fairly close to the header. It's wrapped in split tube conduit and then I have put some foil tape on it also.

I have about 20mm clearance between the header and the harness. Do we think this is enough? Header is ceramic coated.

The other option I am considering is wrapping the starter and loom up in one of those starter heat shields that are like a fabric with stainless cable ties.

20mm is a little tight, I'd fab a steel heatshield (18 gauge) and fit it in the centre of the 20mm gap.

Should half the radiated heat to the starter and cables.

Something like a turbo blanket will work also.

Fibreglass tubing that you can buy from the electrical wholesalers is what I use on wiring that is exposed to high temps (naked flame). It works very well.

Look at your stock factory cars wiring...........it lies on the engine......wrapping the starter in my mind just keeps all the heat in the starter..????.....Also its your car........rerun the wires and put them where they give you peace of mind........its only wire........

The wrapping of the starter is also a good idea Jegs sells a starter jacket that allows for considerable air flow that way it will prevent heat renetion in the starter. The ceramic coating on your headers is not going to be enough to prevent the wiring from being affected.

For some of my underhood and undercar wiring, I'm using the 1200 degree fiberglass from McMaster-Carr McMaster-Carr. Partly for physical protection, partly for heat isolation. It looks good too, IMO far better than the split plastic stuff.

There is a clip-on metal heat shield fitted to the starter at the factory - I have one from my VZ donor, that might assist with the starter itself.

I read that the starter on the 6.0ltr motors was shorter in length (about 2cm) which might assist in giving greater clearance to the wiring. You would need to poke your head under a few bonnets (hoods) in car yards to confirm.
