304 stainless

Hey boys, err & people of the female persuasion--
Is 304 stainless good enough for a fuel tank ?

Yes but why not just go alloy

renovationinnov 12-14-2013 03:15 AM

mines alloy
most trawlers have alloy fuel tanks
hope this helps

Mines 304 stainless in 1.5mm.

Too be honest, as the others have said, i wish i made it from alloy as it took forever to polish, warped in places from the welding and is heavy.

I only had DC tig at the time so stainless was my only option.

Every now and again i think about redoing it in alloy. It is likely one day i will.

Rog246 12-14-2013 03:54 AM

Happens to be a sheet of it available & is polished & 0.9mm so i figured what the hell !
Might give it a go eh ;)

You will probably need to get some ribs pressed into it so that the sides have some strength about them and to stop it banging as it fills and changes temperature etc

dhs.buckley 12-14-2013 01:40 PM

you will need some compo plates when you put the mounts on, if it's that thin.
and also need some baffles to stop the bulging when filling, depends on how much support and the size aswell.

Agree with above, .9 is very thin and if its already polished you will have a hell of a time blending it to make it look any good. The internal work to make it strong enough and straight would be enough to suggest another option, such as aluminium. Just my 2 bobs worth......
Cheers

Well that's just another point I guess Towie. That would be one that I hadn't considered. At least I know someone who can weld ally for me.
