Cobra on Spirit of Tasmania
Looking to take a short trip to Tassie sometime around March.
I am contemplating taking the Cobra. For those who have done this already, were there any problems either driving on or off the boat? Ground clearance issues. awkward ramp angles etc. thanks Doug |
I remember ready a story years ago about some Queenslanders doing a run down there.
I don't recall they mentioning any problems with the boat. I took my Patrol over there a few years ago. By rough memory I think the ramps would be ok. Still better to hear it from some one who has taken there's. Ross |

Driving round Tasie
You will have trouble finding a stretch of road that doesnt have a bend in it. Fantastic for a Cobra. I was amused at a speed limit sign saying speed limit 100KPH it's the limit not a chalenge. Lol :LOL:

Doug, I took the GTI last October and they directed the car to the lowest deck for parking. I remember thinking that the Cobra would definitely scrape on one of the ramps down into the belly of the ship.
The ramp onto the boat itself is fine, just getting down to the lower deck. Might be worth asking for a spot on the upper deck where they park all the caravans and larger cars. You'd be fine there but it seems to be luck of the draw for small cars - depending on where you are in the line-up. In case you haven't visited before... The drive from Burnie down to Cradle Mountain and back out through Wilmot and down to Mole Creek was a highlight for me. The road surface is generally good with plenty of long sweeping corners and undulations. A real driver's paradise, not to mention excellent scenery to occupy any white knuckled passengers! It's a magnificent part of the world. |
What Sambo said - The staff at the Spirit are pretty good with putting vehicles on the right deck, but when you go through the booth just mention how low your car is to make sure.
A good rule for back roads in Tassie - assume that every corner gets tighter as you go around. Many do. If the weather is good the West Coast has the best roads around. But, some spots over there rain 300 days a year!i lived there for 2 years and grew webbing between my toes ;) |
Vehicle on the boat will be fine. I used to live there and transported may vehicles between the mainland and all the ramps on the! boat are gradual and not too sharp!

Hey Dougie my missus had the same plan to celebrate our 25th anniversary last year. Needless to say we did something else.
However it is still on the planned trip list and I'll be looking for feedback on what you do, so we can plan for ours in a year or so. Keep notes mate! Cheers Slo |

I went there in the Daytona 3 years ago, it rained but still a great place to Visit. The roads are great so are the people. If you are going to Hobart (docks) have dinner at Rockwall restaurant. One of the best meals I have ever had.............. I have cousins (with one head) that own a B & B in Deloraine, nice place too. The boat is no trouble, we parked next to a 1940's RR. If you can stretch the budget go for the suites at the front of the boat, if the Sea's are a bit rough your wife will think you are Jonny Homes :LOL: Stiffy |

--and the quickest way to see Tassie is, do the Targa - Awesome! -- so, no probs with cars on and off the boat. Wet roads through the forest ranges can be fun when mixed with diesel,tree sap , moss, snow / ice and fog |
Thanks for the replies. Yes I have been to Tassie previously and had a great time. Last time we flew over and hired a car so this time we thought that it would be nice to take the Cobra. Found the roads to be quite exciting in many places!!!
Thanks for the suggestion I will talk with the people before loading. Stiffy the pointy end of the boat rises and falls quite a bit. I could get sick..... Rog when ya misses shows you the map of Tassie you know that you will be going there! thanks Doug |
