Phillip Is historics / Melbourne GP.

Craig and I are going to Phillip Is for the Australian Historic Racing meeting on 7,8,9 March and then staying on in Melbourne for the GP the following weekend.

I’ve been to the Island, many years ago, but never to the Melbourne GP.

Before we purchase tickets for the GP, we’re looking for advice from anyone who has been there regarding the better places from which to watch the racing, and also where to see interesting behind the scenes pit lane or car preparation areas. Obviously we’re not the sort to sit in one place all day.

We’ll definitely be at the Island for the full programme but for the GP we’ll probably do the old trick of going to the circuit for the two days prior to the race to see practice and the interesting supporting races, and then go somewhere on race day and watch the race on TV.

Any advice on both venues would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I went to the first Adelaide and first Melbourne Grands Prix (and a whole bunch in Europe in the 70s-80s). The only place is see any action these days is opposite the pits or at the end of the main straight, or both. I think it's money better spent to dig deep and pay for premium grandstand seats at these locations.

In relation to PI...... you bastard, I hope it rains!

Hey it's in Victoria and at the Island (or as Mr Sheen put it Southern Siberia!)
Bound to happen.
But hey it'll be fun either way

Ha ha thanks Pete , and thanks for the advice re best viewing spots.

Truth be told, the historics are far and away our main interest, but seeing the GP is on the following weekend, and we'll be down there anyway, might as well go and have a look.

Actually one of the old Healey boys is running a Lister Jaguar on the GP weekend so it will be nice to see that, and it will be interesting to hear what the new FI turbo engines sound like, but other than that I think the two days preceding race day will be enough for us.

On the other hand, PI historics --- can't wait!!!!!

F1 turbos - been there, done that. Fast as stink but lucky to last 2/3rds race distance (circa 1981).

Some snaps from the photo album. Imagine today seeing an F1 car stripped of its bodywirk and being worked on by mechanics in pit lane.

Great days, all before kids, mortgage, etc, etc.

F1/Historics

Downunder,

I am going to the GP on Saturday only (GA) as I cannot do 4 days and

1000 beers anymore :D:D

A mate is coming down also, we want to experience the new turbo sound.

The historic meeting co-incides with the Alpine Run (best Cobra event of

the year) one of the best events in Australia.
