Well...at long last, the serpent breaths again.

Funny story.... got it finally started. Took it up the road for rego and back. Seemed ok, just a plug lead was loose. A week and a bit later, the magnesium wheels were really oxidised so I took them off and wet sand and polished them up, and put them back on. I left the safety wires off and thought I'd go around the block and then check them again before wiring them. The excitement of driving her again seduced me to go around the BIG block - basically a circle from my place at Copacabana through Avoca beach, Kincumber then back to Copa. Anyway I get to Avoca Beach about 3Km and the bum felt a little floaty. Pulled over to check for a flat tyre, and turned out to be both rear spinners were very loose - a couple of turns. and of course, its been so long, I forgot about the hot side pipes. Ouch. No tools and no phone to call the Mrs, I managed to borrow a sledge hammer and piece of 4x2 from a builder nearby and tightened them up to limp home. I was so paranoid I kept stopping to check.

It was an adventure, I must admit, but now I'm so paranoid about the knock offs. Its been too hot up this way to take her out again, but when I do I'll be stopping every Km to check. I know in reality, they've never come off before and most likely wont again...I just have to convince myself.
I've looked up just about every article, forum post and video on knock offs. It will be fine once I get over the paranoia.

So...the motor is a stroked 428Fe (463ci), balanced blueprinted, stage 2 427 heads, roller cam, roller top end, custom cam. 540hp (402kw) and 560 ft lbs (760nm). That's at the flywheel not the treads. But plenty for 1100kgs.

Ooh snakebite!

Don't you tie wire your knockoffs??

Rog246 02-02-2017 02:29 AM

Ohhhh hurtizes !

Tengu 02-02-2017 03:41 AM

Yes spooky, but I intended to just drive around the block, retighten the spinners then apply the wire, but I got carried away and kept driving. They're on now !

Dimis 02-02-2017 03:56 AM

Great to hear it's back on the road pumping along... and you didn't lose any wheels.

Bryan Wilson 02-02-2017 04:43 AM

All works fine for men

Cobra72 02-02-2017 04:52 AM

Ouch, that's a very harsh snake bite reminder indeed! We'll have to organise a drive up there when the weather cools off a little......a beach cruise and lunch at 'Splash' in Terrigal?

Curious.. Aren't the spinners Left and right so the drive direction keeps tightening them ?
I see lots of pics where there are no tie wires.

You would think so, but I can tell you from my own experience that they will spin off when you get on the brakes !!
I was using a Thor hammer which had the soft leather face to tighten the spinners which turns out is not adequate.
Started using a lead dead blow hammer and no issues since.;)
They are now always lock wired for safety.

some of the spinner designs have spring locking tabs to stop them coming undone, no wire required there.

I'm suspecting it was partly due to the engine hunting at low speed. I was behind a slow car for about 2km and the car was jerking in 3rd gear. I kept changing down to 2nd, or riding the clutch.
I'm guessing that snatching back and forth motion of the wheels might have contributed somewhat.

Nasty snake bite!!!

Beautiful car mate.

Vintage Wheels supply a lead hammer when you purchase their product.

Extract from the email between Bob Lacey and myself back in 2008: 'includes lead hammer, wire pliers, anti theft adapter upgrade and steel valves'

Maybe things have changed.

Paging Bob Lacey on the white phone... He must of accidentally forgotten mine then. ;)

I forgot to mention....magnesium wheels... polish them up to your liking and coat them with POR 15 Glisten. clear coat. It is designed to stick to polished surfaces. It is high temp rated as well and really flows out to a smooth coat.

Tengu 02-11-2017 11:30 PM

Thank Ben,
see you soon Paul, once the heat subsides.
Thanks Rob, I'll have to give it a try.
