Starter motor issues 302 v8
Just wondering what people have used for starter motors on their 302/351 motors, mine died on sunday. i pulled it out and found it to be a Hi torque gear reduction starter, and the brush wires had melted, aswell as the windings.
I have tried 3 other starter motors and none fit between the cross member and the exhaust manifolds, so just wondering if anyone else has had the same problem and if so what did they use. |
Tilton markets one of the best.

there are a lot of cheap "hi torque" starter motors on the market some better than others how old was your old one ? . as mentioned tilton are one of the best but ya pay for them. can you take yours to a auto elecy and get it rebuilt . a lot of people hook a relay up inline with there starters so they get full voltage down to them.

Hi Dave,
I've got one of these: http://www.summitracing.com/int/part...view/make/ford So far it hasn't let me down despite being baked by the exhaust. The adjustable boss allows you to rotate the unit and position the solenoid so that it is out of the way. |
it is actually made by Hi Torque in castlemaine, probably 13 years old,
I have taken to an auto elec to see if he can salvage it, but he said doesnt look good at the moment, so just looking around for another if he can not fix it, i have heard CVR are not bad? |
Hi Andrew,
that looks almost identical to the one i have, and price looks good compared to what i have been quoted in albury. also the problem i am having is if i remove the starters from the packaging, there is no returns, so makes it hard to see if it will fit. |
Thats only $15 a year (@ 13 Yrs) -- grab 2 while you're at it - keep one on hand as a spare --they do fail suddenly :)

I Picked up a CVR reduction starter on ebay brand new from a bloke who could'nt fit it to his car, retails about for about $350,got it for $140.
fitted perfectly with 360deg rotatable mount plate and now i have a lot more clearance between the exhaust and the starter, the engine now fires into life on the first crank, very happy! |
