First Engine Start
Don't get exited!
I am still a long, long, long way off starting my engine, but I was wondering what the correct preparation / procedure is for starting and engine for the first time that has been sitting for a long time. Cheers |
What was done to the engine to prep it for its long time in hibernation? Valve train wound back? Oil? Rust in Bores? Prevention of moisture etc etc.
How long has it sat? What kind of engine? Give us a little more info and we can give you more of a general guide before u hit crank. Spookypt |
Engine is a new / recon 351 Windsor
bought as a long motor as a package with the car. sump, intake, rocker covers bolted on by AP rocker cover were removed before delivery, (I have bolted on some others for now), I am not sure what internal preparation AP have done, all holes and openings have been sealed since It was installed and coupled up to trans in the engine bay, it has never had oil in it. The lower intake had to be removed. it all looked very clean and lubed up under there. I have sealed that area with tape and plastic to stop any moisture and dirt. It has been in my garage since August last year http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/pict...480151&thumb=1 Thanks |

You could do the manual pump prime I suspect when the time comes. Remove dissy or cam syncro and drive the oil pump off an extension bit and drill to prelube all the system before starting any cranking in anger. Keep it all sealed up for as long as you can but when you have to open the pack up try and get some run-in oil into it and regularly turn it over squirting oil into the bores. My engine had a pretty hard life prior to my restart but fortunately it doesn't seem to have caused any extra grief other than the shrinking seals in the water pump. Cheers |
Lex, I'm different to most but having now learnt from past experience I will always try to run my engine in on an engine dyno first before it goes into my car. You can bed the rings check leaks run break in oil and tune all before it goes in your car.
Saves heartache on so many different fronts. Spookypt |
Thanks guys, gives me a bit of an idea what to do once my bits arrive.
It would be easy to bolt on all the bits with the engine out...and put it on the dyno.... but a lot of work to pull it out and put back in.... Hmmmmmmmm Could be a good excuse to invite a few mates for a BBQ / Beer Cheers |
