Cost to install 3 phase power?
I'm looking at moving to give myself a bit more space. The houses I'm looking at generally have sheds about 80 metres from the road. I've looked at a couple with 3 phase power and a couple without. I can't recall this being discussed when looking at some of the truly impressive shed builds over the last couple of years.
Any ballpark ideas of what it would cost to install 3 phase into an existing shed 80m from the road (or an idea of what you paid and what you got for that?) Thanks! |

can you get the trenching from ya shed down to the road yourself that alone will save you thousands

if the house is closer to the main supply post it is cheaper to bring 3 ph to the house first then from the meter box under ground [600mmm min] to the shed as enegex will only supply 1 metered supply per customer so for this you are looking at est $ 9k with meter box up grades & form 5 submissions for supply up grade if this is no help then pm me on the finer details & ill get my electrician to base quote up for you rob |

Thanks for the offer Rob, but I don't want to waste anyone's time with proper quotes until I'm ready to go. Your ballpark figure is what I needed thanks. I'll put it out to the universe... This is a place I'm keen on and it's going to auction. It has a 15x12 and 6x9 shed joined together. 3 phase and plumbing and phone installed. Maybe I could rent the house out and live in the shed. I rang a shed place and they quoted $48k for two sheds this size. With the 3 phase and plumbing its therefore $60k value. If only Matt... It's out in the boonies - that's the only way I can afford it. I'm sticking to the south side for easier access to work, but thanks for the thought.

What would you need 3ph power for? At least in the us 3ph to residential is almost unheard of. Industrial yes for large motors. Maybe you have a huge compressor?

3 phase is great as a lot of 3 phase machinery comes up really cheap at auctions ect my old house I had it and my drill press /compressor /mig welder ect ect even my mums 50 yr old home has 3 phase to the garage . now im back on single phase the 18 cft compressor I have seems tiny to my old one my single phase tyre changer does not have the same grunt as my old 3 phase and struggles with some of my race tyres . im making sure my next house has it that's for sure .

Tony, I'm enthusiastic but mechanically incompetent. What I can make a mess of with single phase machinery, I can irretrievably destroy with 3 phase!
Seriously though, I'm mainly thinking of a hoist, welder and compressor with the option for a big air conditioner later. |
craig even with all that running you can still run on single phase but have a separate switch board to run the shed & have it separately metered its call side by side meters as in granny flat add on to homes

I seriously contemplated 3 phase when I was designing/building my shed, All the sparkies said it was not worth the $10k investment. All hobby hoists/welders/compressors and so on are available with 15/20 Amp options. I simply added 20 amp power points internally and externally At opposites ends of the shed so I could weld outside if required, I haven't Used them yet........except for the compressor. Stiffy |
I would have to agree with stiffy, if you start buying 3PH stuff you are just locking yourself in to it for the future - what about the next time you move? you're going to lose all the 3PH stuff at a great loss, or have another big bill to put it in again.

I am a sparky frim a past life and would have to agree that its probably not worth the trouble if you don't have a specific need for it like mills/lathes that are 3 phase. However, I really can't see how it would be another 10k on top of a regular install either. If you were doing new mains to a property close to the connection point, you would probably only need a 4core 6mm mains instead of the regular 16mm 2core which wouldn't cost that much more. And there is no need for some elaborate industrial switch board. Long time away from this stuff, but anything more than say 1-2k seems extreme. Some of the three-phase plugs and sockets can get expensive, but have come down now clipsal has some competition. If you have ducted refrigerated aircon, three phase can also be a good idea, its quite a bit more efficient, in the region of 20% from memory, more so if you use it for heating and not just a handfull of summer days.
