Default Bringing car parts in from USA to Aus

Hey all.
I have a shopping list for this Mustang.
It totals $986 US without shipping, shipping is a further $600US

When they calculate for tax, does that include shipping in price and is it worked out in US dollar spending or Aus dollar spending?

I am sure that someone may correct me here, however this is what I have experienced in the past (2011), I am not aware of changes however being the government, I sure something is different.

Customs will first check the invoice amount excluding shipping and then convert the USD figure at the exchange rate at the day the item was shipped from the USA, not the day of your order or invoice date... its the date items were shipped/sent.

As long as this converted amount is under $1000- AUD then it is all sweet. If it is over.... then there are duties, 5% on this invoice cost of the item, and gst on the invoice cost including shipping.

It's AU$ $1000 unfortunately and I believe it's on the purchase price not including shipping. It's a little fuzzy though.

Australian Customs

If the value of the goods is over $1000 you have to pay GST on the value including the shipping costs.

Just make two separate purchases to keep your invoice and shipping total under $1000.

Yeah that's what i do......make several orders, I buy alot of stuff from Summit...almost every week....I just order up to about $800 US then I wait a day and order again keeping the number under $1000. Funny thing is the parcels always seem to turn up on the same day......If you are ordering from CJ Pony parts contact them and ask if the parts are in stock. Their web page Wont tell you an item is on back order until you have paid for it.

Just be mindful that shipping costs out of the US can be ridiculous.
Sometimes cheaper to just pay the gst and duty.

Your $600 shipping wont be split to $300 & $300 - Might come out to $450 & $450. Which kind of negates the whole point.

Just sayin' look into it fully

Dave the guys are right. I just brought in a heap of stuff for my F350.

Orders are based on AUD and if under $1000 no duty etc applies. This amount does not include shipping. If you go over $1000 for parts then duty and GST is calculated on the value including the shipping amount.

Splitting it depending on size can work out cheaper. It did for me.

Yep, I will do some juggling of the order and see what I can get the shipping down to as two orders.

I once ordered something just over $1000 AUD and they made a mistake and marked it $700 on the invoice. Silly duffers.

When I ordered from Summit I didn't have to pay GST on anything because they for a 1971 model engine. They did try and charge GST for the camshaft as they reckoned it could be used in a later model engine. With further discussion customs let it through.
Good luck

Dollar is currently up from opening this morning. Decent fall based on speculation and US news of no change in interest rates for 'considerable time' (exact wording varies depending on source).

Major banks have revised forcast for AUD by year end. Two of these are above .90c and the others above current AUD position.

What does this mean..... nothing... if you want car parts, get em, skip buying that carton of pis$ for this week and you are no worse off.

Solved.

Yep, the paperwork needs to be signed off by the seller that it's made in the USA.
