Introducing my new toy

Hi all,

To those of you who are regulars on the forum you would have see the thread titled on the hunt for my first cobra. Well today the hunt finished, yes that's right the search is over already, today purchased my first Cobra.

I have been casually looking for the last 12 months or so while awaiting the inheritance which would pay for my new toy. I have sat in probably 6 or so and not really fit in any of them. Being 6 foot tall and long in the back fitting has been an issue.

So I ventured up to Bendigo today with some trepidation to view what was possibly the bargain of the century a 2003 Wooley and Evans 2003 AC Cobra Replica in VIC | eBay.

Fit I did it really only requires some very minor tweaks to be close to perfect. So now beings the journey to make it my own so forum members and CCCV members prepare for an endless raft of questions. A special thanks goes to Rob from the club who has had many phone calls regarding various cars his advice was in valuable.

First on the list is some wheels, I am tossing up between 15 inch and 17 inch pin drives. Does anyone have any recommendations as to were to get these from?

I will off course post plenty of photos.

Cheers Andrew

Thanks Geoff I have already started looking at wheels those gold things just have to go. I was going to ask who to talk to about wheels.

snakesaway 09-05-2015 04:26 AM

Ok so while we are talking wheels. Whats best way to workout off set? Obviously there is no standard offset as it depends on diff and half shaft length and kit type I guess.

Congrats on your purchase. I saw that listing and thought it was good value and I few simple things will really personalise it for you.

As for offsets, there are probably easier ways, however I would measure your shock mounting distance at the ride height, then jack up and place on stands, remove wheels and shocks, use some box tubing with holes drilled for the same distance as the shocks mounts at preferred ride height.

Now you have your suspension in the right spot. You can now start taking measurement from wheel face and so on, check clearances to inner guard , chassis and whatever else may be in the way.

I am sure someone will come on with a better option, but this is just my way and it's worked in the past.

Cheers.

Ok I think I see were you are coming from. I am sure it will be even clearer once I get the car in the garage and on jacks.

Thanks Andrew

My suggestion on offset would be to measure the wheel you have and how much you want to move it

Get under the car and see what the clearance looks like all around the wheel.

Have fun - was good to talking to you on Wednesday - and congratulations

interesting, but sounds kind of complicated? I would measure it as it sits now and decide what you want to change, then remove the wheels and measure them, and get your result by comparing the numbers.

I just had a good look at the pics of the eBay listing and for what it's worth, here are my thoughts.

Leave the wheels, paint the centres in a black, grey or charcoal. Simpler and cheaper.

It does appear that you will not have the available room for pin drives, once you add the adapter and the wheels centre thickness, there will be bugger all room for any wheel dish and so forth.

Lower it by an inch, paint the centres and drive and enjoy it.

Good on you for the purchase, many talk about the dream , you will be living it.

Thats a good point and pretty much what my uncle said. Thankfully there is still some money in the budget so I can get the wheels might just have to get the bolt on style oh well.

I went 10 inch rims and 295 tyres on my Evans/Wooley kit by getting half shafts and control arms from a E type that are 3 inches shorter than the standard xjs rear.

The rims were made and the centres reused on the new rims. Backspace was 5 inch so in the centre of the rim which gives 5 inch dish.

on my my wooley kit i used 420 g wishbones and had the driveshafts made from spicers they ended up a far bit shorter maybe the same as e model but i also ran 295 tyres on it as well on the rear , i bought some rims off a fellow cobra builder at the time .
