Surge Tank with internal Bosch044
 
Hi All,

Last Cobra Nationals (2015) at Wakefield I experienced some fuel starvation on the Fish Hook.

I already have an external Surge Tank and Bosch044 EFI and Carter LP lift pump arrangement.

Turns out my Surge Pot (0.6L) was not fit for my purpose - e.g. It was too small and the pickup at the "bottom" is really at the side about 1/4 the way up the tank so not a very efficient design.

Also I hated how loud my Bosch044 was.

So, I purchased and installed this neat arrangement from 034Motorsports in the states. Nice bit of kit with Billet machined ends. A little pricey but worth it I reckon.

The Bosch044 is inside the surge pot. Nice and quiet now.

The design is very efficient and is meant to use every last drop etc.

That's a clever idea.

Looks like a good solution Greg. You could even install that unit in the engine bay and have the lift pump feeding it from the rear. If my tank mounted pump setup doesn't work I'll have look at trying one of these.

I can't agree about fuel pumps being too loud, a growling fuel pump gives it a race feel ;)
That's a nice neat package though, makes my bundle of hoses, filter and pump look cumbersome!

Mike - good idea I hadn't thought of putting it up the front. Although my plumbing (e.g. Fuel reg etc is already at the rear so would have been a bit of re-arranging.).

Gav- I still have a moderate amount of plumbing but this has at least reduced some of it.

It also allowed me to mount it in vacant space in my wheel well, whereas before it was in the middle near the diff and hard to get at. With this arrangement my LP pump and the surge tank etc is all accessible from the side.

There is still a little "hum" for that "performance" sound.

You could set it up with the reg next to the pump or directly on the fuel rails for a tidy installation.

Keeps all the high pressure lines to a minimum and you could probably get away with a 5/16" feed and return from the lift pump in the tank.

Hmmm... got me thinking now.

Just wondering if your return from the reg goes back into the surge tank or into the main tank. Even though your surge tank is small it shouldn't run out if the return is directed back into the surge tank. You then overflow the surge tank back into the main tank. What size lift pump is it?

Andrew has loads of wasted space in his drivers seat, maybe he could fit a surge tank there?

Lift pump is a Carter 650HP.

The return from the Reg did go back to the old "little" surge tank. But the crap fuel tank in the my "round-tube" CR has the fuel outlet on the driver side(too many right hand corners and acceleration at Wakefield). Pls my little surge tank had the outlet about 1/4 way up the Surge pot.

The new one is a much better design and about 1L capacity. The pickup is right at the bottom inside the surge tank.

Greggggggg,

I run the standard GM in tank pump/reg/swirl pot only issue is I need to run more than 1/2 a tank of fuel otherwise it starves on sweepers.

Great standard system, no noise at all, no return lines (GM) small downside
Is the extra fuel (only on the track).

I have a genuine Holden pump built into a swirl pot, it is one that Mike built.
Back when I was at Holden, and could get my hands on a load of free pumps.
It is nice and quiet, I also replicated the fuel filter and mounts using all genuine Holden stuff.
So if I have a failure, I can just order direct from GMH

I completely forgot I built that Dave. That's the one with the bolt down flange on the top.

Rohan, Phil Shiel has done this on his CR as has DaveW too.

When I looked into it I didn't realise you could shorten the stock VE Unit to fit into our CR tank which is quite shallow.

I wish I did and saved a lot of plumbing etc.

Hopefully Phil and DaveW's will work ok.

Note: They had to modify their Fuel Tanks to make a wider opening and weld on a flange to mount the VE unit.

Sorry to be picky, but are those relays exposed and upside down? It's just that I've seen them fill with water over time and rust out. You could drill a pinhole in them for drainage.

Thats ok Jaydee. Interesting I had never thought of that.

Although its probably misleading in the photo - those relays etc are a fair way inside - e.g. they are not in the guards.

But I have been meaning to make a little detachable panel to cover that area as I get little stones in there.
