Side Window build
Guys
Despite having a fair scour of the forum I didn't find much guidance as to how one goes about building the sliding side windows for the cobras. Does anyone have a lovely set of how to pictures? Or can anybody nicely describe how I go about setting up the windows? Or is there a set being made in Melbourne I can come have a look at? To start with what material and thickness should I be using? I want to progress my soft top and so will need to finish off the frames already made by Marty. Looking forward to some good feedback. Cheers and thanks Steve |

I either cut or notched the frame sections and then welded them to the shape of the window. I made the bottom section detachable to facilitate installation and removal of the perspex. i made a set for my cobra about ten years ago Stephen they attach to the doors by allen bolts that screw in to inserts in top of doors the window needs an angle on the bottom to follow contour of door have a couple of photo but not very good you are welcome to borrow them to see if that sort of thing can work on yours

I made a pair of side curtains for a B&B hardtop. No welding required. Just need a table saw and drill.

The black edge is paint. This side curtain was made by Ape Tops and modified to fit the Hurricane by adding a larger gasket to the bottom. Query is about the window pane construction
Thanks for the commentary so far guys.
I tried to post last night but my systems didn't work, as I was going to focus the request for feedback on how to actually put together the sliding window pane components. As you can see below, I've got all the main hardware developed, hood bows and the side frames into mounting positions. http://i564.photobucket.com/albums/s...pskhicntoq.jpg It is just the construction method around mounting the window panes that I am trying to understand. Peter's first post was closest to issue but does anyone else have details on the actual window system used? Cheers and thanks |
It might be the pic but are the top and bottom of the window frame parallel Stephen? If not, you'd probably be best installing one large piece of Perspex on the whole thing, then making a smaller sliding panel.
Rob Hamiton would be another good source. He's made a few like this (with full sliding panels I mean). |

To be honest I hadn't measured but would like to think that is something Marty wouldn't have got wrong. But I will check. And I did know Rob was another source of advice but hadn't taken that route yet and don't need to now. Anyway after seeing the trimmer this morning fellas, it is all sorted as he does this installation job as part of the soft top trimming exercise - lol He showed me the felt they use in the channel to set up the sliding panel and in fact helped me get an understanding of the side window frame set up he needs anyway. One frame fitted flush to the rear of the windscreen and he needs a gap. So Marty now has that frame and knows how much needs to come off, so the process is now in train. Thanks again lads |

Blackwoods fully trim the window frames so you see no metal as the end result. Not sure what others do but that saves some effort in terms of anodising I thought I'd have to arrange. I've no doubt the end result will be pretty good, if the initial work is anything to go on. But then they have had tons of experience and was even discussing construction items from photos Peter had of work done on a Robnell and an original cobra way back when. Sadly this work wont happen before the Fest so I might be in a quandary as to whether to commit to the weekend. Can handle light showers and drizzle, as I've already experienced but exposure in a downpour isn't needed at this stage of the build. Will see what Marty and a recommended alignment shop have to say in terms of timing and availability to properly align the car. |

If you're worried about weather, tow it. The pits are covered, and the parking at accommodation is an underground concrete garage.

All falling into place, arms ready, arranged alignment care of Rob Tucker and I'll need to brave the weather early Saturday morning as am unlikely to be able to drive up Friday.
I'll dress accordingly and take a brolly - lol |
