Oil temp sender location in a ZF diff?
 
Has anybody fitted an oil temperature sender to a Commodore VE/VF ZF differential housing?
It looks like the only place is the drain plug tapping...? Is this feasible?

Yes Glen, that bottom plug is the spot.
I have in mine, I can take a pic if you need

There is actually wiring back to the rear of the car in CSX 4000 series cars for a differential cooling unit if you really want to go all out. Not sure if other makes have same thing. I looked into it, but didn't go forward with it.

Thanks Bernica, but no I won't need an oil cooler back there. I'll probably modify the drain plug to take a temp sensor on advice from Craig ("Mr. AP")

Hi Glen, here is a pic of both Diff and Gearbox oil temp senders.
I use the engine oil temp gauge only and 2 momentary buttons to switch between the senders. i.e. normally sits on engine oil temp, press the button and it flicks to diff, let it go and it flicks back to engine.

The diff plug is 16mm, and I use an Aeroflow adapter NPT to Metric AF912-M16-02 for a 1/8npt temp sensor.
and i think from memory the gearbox is 18mm version also from Aeroflow.

I like that Dave. Might pinch that idea. Presume you mean that the diff temp is on one momentary switch, and 'box temp on the other. Both using the Si glee engine oil temp gauge. Nice. How will I remember which is which though. Mmm.

Aren't the drain plugs magnetic on the end to attract metal fragments, worn from the mechanicals, so as to prevent them circulating through the diff? If so, I'd consider an alternative location for the sender.

The T56 has a large magnet located in a pocket inside the bottom of the gearbox housing. No need for a magnetic drain plug.

Thanks Mike. Now I'm curious to know if the magnet in the t56 can be serviced readily, and, is there a similar set-up in the ZF diff? I have an earlier ZF diff out of a VZ (2004). Thanks.

Whilst the idea of diff and gearbox temp gauges is a cool idea, if you think that on the track you are actually going to have time to press a button or even look at a gauge, good luck! I have a hard time just finding the 2 seconds it takes to look at the engine oil and water temps!

To get to the magnet you need to pull the extension housing off so not really serviceable. There's actually 2 donut shaped magnets in there, each about 1.75" in diameter. I reckon they could collect a heap of filings before they needed servicing.

Modena so true. But you can cheat to some degree.

What Ive done with all my gauges is stick a red line, red/yellow line and RED DOT for the super important ones (aka oil pressure) on all my gauges to tell me that if the needle is on the wrong side of this line I have an issue. I don't have to worry about reading temps, I just check that the gauge needles are all in the right spot. Less hassle and can glance, check and confirm pretty quick.

Not a great pic but it sorta shows what I do. Ive got a fair bit going on with switches and gauges so the less I have to concentrate on incar the better for me.

I have white telltales on my motorbike gauges at key points too, but that's more because I can't read those little numbers :D
