I had a bad ignition switch once. As long as it was "Ignition ON", the ignition was on. And if you held in the "START" position the starter it would crank and start. There was an open in the ignition circuit between "Ignition ON" and "START". When and if you released the starter position to spring back to "Ignition ON", it would die. You had to force it back to "Ignition ON" to keep the engine running.

Found it finally.....
Tested the ignition switch and it was fine but it was a very good guess.
After cutting a bunch of cable ties and unwinding a couple of rolls of electrical tape I found the culprit. Had a fried joint. I think what has happened is the +12v battery wire that piggybacks off the starter had shorted out due to some of the insulation melting from the hot headers. It was this wire that had cooked the join where it is spliced into the fuse\relay module. So I was still getting 12v when I tested, but as soon as some load came on it couldn't cope and dropped to millivolts.
Thanks for all the suggestions and certainly helped me track it down.
Now to put it all back together and design a heat shield for the starter\wiring. Ill post a pic up here once I come up with something.

There are a couple of empty 10mm bolt holes in a perfect spot for this. Must be for engine mounts for another model. I've ordered some heat resistant cable sleeve to wrap the cables in as well. |

You could also use a sheet of formable heat shield that would do an even better job for you.. :) no radiating from the headers.. :)

As Gregg said, the commodore has such a shield as standard. I retained mine and adapted it to shield my alternator, as the headers run further forward and clear of the starter.
Although on mine is was that wrinkly, double layered flexible aluminium stuff. Mine was VF Commodonor.
You can buy that flexible heat shield stuff quite easily I'm told. Haven't looked myself. |

That looks good Guy, I might grab some of that formable stuff as well - I think what Ive done will make a difference but maybe not sufficient for full protection. I liked that you wrapped up the knock and Crank Pos sensors as well. What is the one into your sump for?
