Help with exploding thermo fans
Hoping for some advice from the Racers out there, At Race Wars on the weekend my 2 10inch thermofans exploded together at 200kph.....they lost all their blades and only the outer plastic housing was still bolted to the frame, they also took out the radiator....lol.
Was a scary moment. Now the fans fitted were El cheapo Calibre fans and about 5 years old. Now Im getting a new radiator I want to get decent fans that wont let go at high speed. Do you think that just fitting a pair of Davies Craig or similar fans will fix the problem or do I need to reduce the air flow to stop the fans overspeeding at high speed? Any advice? |
is the radiator shrouded? I've seen some shrouded setups that have bypass flaps to allow extra airflow to go around the fans and bypass them thus reducing the airflow forced through the fan blades. At low speeds the negative pressure generated by the fan pulls the flap closed.

No it's not shrouded. The car ran so cool it barely needed fans.
We think the el cheapo Calibre fans over speeded and exploded. New rad is on the way and will get Davies Craig brand fans. Next year might have to block off some airflow to the radiated |

This may be of no help if you have to run pusher fans, but I've had my Cobra up to 225 Kmh many times with no problem. It is an inexpensive 12" fan I bought off Ebay, but it is a puller mounted behind the radiator. I control it manually and turn it off when on the track. |
My fans are puller fans, th y sit behind the radiator.

Just like Mike mentioned, I had a shroud with vents to allow excess air through at speed.
Never had any problem, I found it was the lower speed events that messed up the radiator. |

I use two fans with two speed motors from an Audi. Low speed is for normal and you can have a second temp sender, or manual switch for the high speed .. Audi uses them , as do other manufacturers , when the AC switches on it switches to high.

They just didn't like the 40's colour Dave.
I cant see them overspeeding. Were they straight (noisy but pull more) or curved blades (less efficient)? I still think its the colour that made em let go! |
Yeah.....exit interviews indicate a lack of liking the colour and the course language used frequently when driving.....just like all employees they were replaced with an internet ad....
They were flat blade fans......car never ever came close to overheating. so they served me well....lol |
