Motec, sensors and coils help
Guys
Am seriously thinking of getting the Motec I have had in storage fitted finally. Some early research I did ages ago included conversation on the Motec page. Got this response below from a Motec staff member, and want to try and confirm what my AU windsor engine may or may not have so I can prepare for the ECU and wiring change over and install. Motec feedback as: "The basic sensors needed to run an engine using an M84 are as follows; Crank trigger position sensor Cam (Sync) position sensor Throttle Position Sensor Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor Engine Coolant Temperature Inlet Air Temperature Sensor These should all (IAT is potentially in the MAF sensor) be currently present on the engine as they are the standard inputs for any EFI system, and can be used with the M84 by calibrating the sensor inputs to the M84. With the coils, they may need to have an external igniter, but most modern coils have built in igniters. How many wires go into the coils? What is the part number of the coils? With that information I should be able to tell you if they need an external igniter or not." Not all quite Greek to me but am more to happily say I am just not sure what my engine does and doesn't have. So from the collective experience and exposure with the AU windsors, can anyone provide definitive advice on what my engine should have compared to the list above and including coil capabilities? Hope sonebody can help. Cheers Steve |
Hi Steve.
crank sensor is the one pointing to the chopper disc on the harmonic balancer. cam sync I think you can use a distributor output. If you use the ecu for spark firing. Map sensor you will need to fit. runs a small hose off a manifold fitting. If you have std airflow meter the Map sensor will replace that. Throttle position sensor is on the throttle body. intake air temp will be near the airflow meter. coolant temp is easy to fit but could already have one. Shouldn't be too hard. |
Thanks Bender
Now all I have to do is research all of those bits you mentioned and see if they are there, I've no idea what most of what you just said means! |

The late model 5.0 had the EDIS distributorless ignition system which had coil packs.
Some are now fitting the MSD cam sync and L.S coils. Slowy, one of our club members is doing just that with the later model Motec;) |
