Alternate dipstick locations on AU Windsor
G'day Folks

Looking to swap out the mashed sump on my 5L AU Windsor in SLOWY. :(

The standard forward pan sump runs the welded dipstick attachment to the driver's side of the sump.

I've been given another forward sump but it must be off an earlier car as it doesn't have the attached dipstick fitting.

So the question is, to relocate the dipstick where else on the Windsor engines were the dipsticks located.

Any photos and descriptions of alternate locations would be great if anyone can post up for me. :):)

The car's already up on blocks getting rear end treatment and the sump swap out will follow so any advice would be appreciated.

They were in the front timing cover, pass side Assuming you are using a font sump, not rear. This quick pic should help. There are several oil pan configurations. I can never get pics right, so here are some basic links to see.

Well I see after looking at your build photos, you have EFI, way different story. They use reverse rotation water pumps which have a totally different pump mounting pattern. Also there are two types (length) of pumps. The shorter being the Explorer 5.0l. Ford Racing used to sell those conversions in kit form. Use this info instead. It will be way easier than a long winded explanation from me.

In a nutshell, you can drill your stock cover to accept the front dipstick, or purchase a replacement listed in the Motor Trend article (Ford Performance Parts PN M-6059-D351) just pay attention to which type of back cover holes on the water pump. I think you would have a heck of a time trying to clear all the power steering pump bracket. I wold just get the correct oil pan again.
Interesting they used the explore intake vice the usual truck intake.

Thanks 74proii

Yep you hit my preferred option replace with std pan, but these seem hard to find.

Though I wouldn't mind ditching the current dipstick and putting in a nocely finished version for looks.

1996 - 2001 Ford Explorer V8 AWD not 4WD, Mercury Mountainer. Dorman P/N 264-095. should be perfect. Around $95 U.S.

Solved my dilemma by acquiring a good condition replacement sump with the dipstick attachment, so off a similar late model falcon.

Will have a play with the old sump to see if I can fabricate a raised oil tray myself.
