Importing an ERA 427 Cobra
 
G'Day Guys

Been a while since I've been on the forum and still trying to decide on what way I will go in trying to get my hands on a Cobra 427. Being in Melbourne I have been looking for a long time at a Superformance but with the new engineering compliance laws it looks like I will never get an normally aspirated V8 into a car and I just cant bring myself to go the modern fuel injected Coyote or LS. I really wanted something more period correct.

For now I have been looking to importing a car direct from the US that has so many Cobra's to choose from. Has anyine imported an ERA? What about importing a car more than 25 years old? Would that be easier?

In particular:

Road vehicle kits including disassembled or partly disassembled road vehicles must be assessed by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications. If they determine an import approval is not required, documentation similar to a non RAV entry approval will be issued. This will allow the kit or disassembled vehicle to be released from customs control.

In regards to a car built prior to 1989, there is a really good article about it HEREYou need to contact the import division directly to get a proper answer to the multitude of questions you and they will both have in regards to the importation of a non conforming vehicle.

I looked into it (importing an ERA to South Australia) back about 10 years ago, and quickly decided that it was far too difficult.
Victoria might be different. If you are not already a member, you should consider joining the Vic. club, or at least go to some of their meetings. They would be able to give you good advice. I did actually attend one of their meetings several years ago. It's a big club (at least by Adelaide standards :o) and they will have a lot of the answers to your questions. As well, they're a nice, friendly mob.
