Older replica Cobra's 427's imported into Oz
Looking at a US Superformance MkIII that came into Australia many years ago now and was registered as a 65 vehicle due to the fact it was registered in the US as a 65.
I know there were a number of such vehicles that came into Oz in the late 90's and early 2000's With the now much stricter import and registration laws in Australia are these cars registration protected by the 'Grandfather Rule' Comments from prospective owners on their experiences would be greatly welcomed. |
I saw a FFR come in as a 65 in teh mid 2000's. I dont believe there are any protections. If its a 65 built car and you can prove it is one then no worries but I'd be 99% sure unless you can prove it was built in 65 with supporting documentation and paid the appropriate import duties reflecting a car of that value then its only a matter of time until DOT asked you to pop in for a visit.

I think you will find your Grandfather Clause (a provision in which an old rule continues to apply to some existing situations while a new rule will apply to all future cases.) is not relevent as the precedent of the car in question came in fraudulently. (That being it wasnt a 65 therefor it cant be protected by being something its not.) Yes people brought in cars and called them 65's so they could get around DOT compliance issues but in the end people get caught. I've read of several cases in Vic and Qld where DOT inspectors have walked around car shows and put notices on cars windscreens to say please present at DOT as we dont think your 65 cobra is a 65 cobra. A very well known and desriable RCR GT40 in Australia currently has this very issue. Buyer Beware.!
