Superchargers
Noticed some of you have supercharged your engines.
I am considering a supercharger and starting my research. Would be interested in knowing what type you have used and why?... Any problems or installation issues?...for example..apart from the kit price, was there lots of other items that needed changing/purchasing?.. Thanks.... |
I can't really comment on what you get with a complete supercharger kit from someone like www.capa.com.au because I bought individual fuel system / blower items from the States and had my own brackets etc fabricated.
After a lot of research, and talking extensively with other owners, engine builders and Vortech's own tech department I couldn't go past Vortech for reputation, quality, service and numerous sizing options. I would advise that whatever boost level you're thinking of running, think carefully about incorporating an intercooler right from the outset. It'll give you an added safety margin against detonation, and more power into the bargain. |

I notice you have a Chev. Here's a Brisbane car that has an early Paxton supercharger on a 350TPI chev. The guy that owns this car runs Venom Custom Fabrication in Brisbane. He has done a bit of work on my car, as well as the blower install on Dave Samson's Holden powered Cobra. He has recently also mounted an air to water intercooled blower onto a 5.0L Ford Cobra up here. Want twin turbos - he's done that too on a quad cam 32 valve 4.0L Lexus powered Cobra!!!!:D

Certainly like the look and fitment of the Vortech Blower. Went to see my mechanic on Saturday to discuss Blowers and he recommended that firstly I put on an Injection system such as the TPI and then fit a Vortec supercharger...Cost at least $10,000... Maybe I'll revisit stroking to a 383?...similar HP gains (40-50%) but somewhat cheaper.... Once again..thanks for your help... Other comment appreciated... |

If you want to stick with your carb setup, I'd strongly recommend the B&M / Holley underbonnet blower. The latest 177 cube blower is no taller, but slightly longer than the smaller 144 cube blower.
I had a little B&M 144 blower on a 302 windsor motor in a stupid old TD Cortina of all things%/ The motor was nothing special (hydraulic cam, hypereutectic pistons, iron heads etc), but the low down torque was WAY more impressive than my 460 Falcon. The old Cortina could leave tyre marks down the highway just by rolling on the throttle in top gear!!! Have a look at the dimensions here: http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLin.../SCK/6500.html It should hopefully fit under your standard hoodscoop. If not, you have a bit of fibreglass work to do. I checked out the Holley 142 as you suggested and they certainly are compact. Looked at my setup for the Holley and I would have to increase my Hood scoop by around 4 inches. It would mean that my hood scoop would be around 6 inches above the bonnet line.. I haven't seen any cobras with such a big scoop, might look strange with a big scoop?... Comments... regards... |
This is about the only time that other guys will agree that 6 inches is too big%/
I'm assuming that you've already factored in a dropped base for the air filter (like the K&N filter in the photo above). Other than that, there's another 1/2" or so that could come off the manifold flange on the Ford version. Dropped engine mounts will lower the overall height some more. I don't know the deck height of a Chev, but if you can't lower your engine in the chassis you may have trouble fitting the blower at all:( Shame, because they are SO MUCH FUN to drive - and the sound of a B&M blower hammering away in the engine bay was worth the price of the blower in itself!!! |
lexus v8
Hi all,
im planning on using a lexus 1uz-fe v8 in my cobra but with a slight difference, a whipplecharger, but i need to find a manifold to suit if anyone knows of where i could get one? ive still got to get those 80 cobra pics from goalburn on the internet yet ive been a bit slack. thanks michael :3DSMILE: |
The ATI procharger is the same basic design as the Vortec but has an integral intercooler with all units. As a result of this they run more hp than the competitors which don't have intercoolers.
