Jaguar IRS
If you have a Cobra from a manufacturer they should have this information, contact either a club or reputible company, as Jaguar has been the most popular rear end to use, whereas now the Ford IRS 8.8" has become the better choice from a weight and availability point of view!
They should be readily available from some wreckers, the most desirable would be the narrower E type unit they come with the Thornton Powerlok LSD, the downside is the small rear brake calipers, absolutely useless small padded items (I tried racing on these once!) these can be replaced with 4.2XJ6 calipers. You could get an XJ6/XJ12 pick one with LSD, it would probably have to be narrowed to fit the Cobra. Rebuilding, not that difficult, but you would be best to contact a good mechanic who is fussy and clean, so many people have no idea, so its best to read up on rebuilding, and maybe do it together with a mechanic. Diff ratios should be available, a good pick is around 3.07 for general road use, all this depends on gearbox ratio if overdriven or direct. Torque they wont handle what a 9" Ford does. but might come close to the 8.8" Ford, if you are considering Small Blocks with even in excess of 500bhp they handle that, if you dont do dump starts on slicks, but once you get into 600 bhp plus Big Blocks they dont last, as my last Cobra had a Richmond gear 9" IRS with spool, as the Jaguar crumbled under the loadings! Hope that gives some idea - Ant |
Thank very much, just the info I was after!
By the time I start building the falcon IRS may welll be the way to go. :> |
