Sheared bolt on Jag rearend
I'm going to expose my mechanical inability with this question.
Just got out from under the Unique 289 and doing a little cleaning I found a sheared bolt (one of two) holding the left rear suspension to the differential. The bolt head is flopping around and still wired to the bolt to the rear of it... the other three bolts seem intact. Any input would be appreciated.... |

HI i would recomend you buy 4 new bolts from a jag dealer as they are a special bolt with a taper on them and make sure you torque them up to the recomended spec . make sure you put oil or anti seize lube on the thread and then lock wire them.

are you talking about the Double ended bolt that carries the lower control arm? does this also mount your diff. to the frame in a unique? KK |
Casaleenie, As oz says..get new bolts..very special ones they are, and take note of the proper way to wire the bolts.
However, I would also recommend you bolt a plate under the diff. If you look underneath that bracket, you'll notice two machined bosses with two threaded bolt holes in each boss. One boss at each end of each bracket. On a jag there is a plate bolted under the diff which ties both those brackets together. Tis good insurance. JUst dont forget to drill a large hole under your oil drain plug. |
I've had the same problem myself (a couple of times).
When I went to the Jag joint to get some replacement bolts, the guy said this was a common problem, especially when you don't wire them in. Make sure you get that plate for the bottom of your diff. Good ol'Rebel. 270 posts of rubbish and he's finally come up with a winner. I'd say he could retire from the forum now, but we already out number the QLD's 10 to 1 so he better stick around.:) |

Any one have a good source for the plate or tips on how and out of what they have made theirs?

I screwed a couple of bolts in to the base.
Pressed a piece of cardboard on to it. Used that as a template to put the holes in to a piece of 4mm steel plate. |
check my photo gallery, you will see how the bottom plate for the diff looks like. I recomed it and think it is absolutely necessary if you really abuse the car.

They were and still are wired.. The only reason the bolt head is still there is because of the safety wire... On the CWI website for Jag parts the screw ID numbers are #1177 and #1209.. Someone posted on the Unique forum that the bolts are different lengths... My mechanical abilities amount to using my finger to dial a garage. KK, No, I'm referring to the bolts that enter the differential casting and hold the bracket that the lower control arm pivots on. Rebel, Sounds like the thing to do. I'll check into it... How do I print the thread on the bolt without printing all the colors and extra stuff???

The Jag joint was a Jag wrecking yard here in Australia.
Even if the bolts weren't wired the head can't fall out because the LC/Arm needs to be removed before the bolts can come out. They are different lengths, about a 1/4 inch difference from memory. |

Down to Bowling Green Kentucky and a visit to the Corvette Museum and the Plant tour. **) Off to Gateway Raceway in St. Louis Missouri tomorrow for the Run N Gun.
