Speedo gauges
Hello everyone.
Does anyone know of the top of there head if Australian standards require the speedo to be in KPH or can they be fitted if reading MPH? Also I havent ever taken out the sppedo sender unit on the T56 but am wondering if it is possable to fit a speedo cable drive to these? The sender is a pulse generator but I dont know how it is driven. |

when l picked up my cobra, in the speedo itself had a little sticker saying KPH over the MHP |
If your speedo is electric driven then it is easy to calibrate to correct reading with the numbers on it and you could put a sticker over it but I am looking at a gauge set from America that is MPH and is cable driven, the speedo goes to 140 MPH but if converted to KPH then it would not be much good when I hit 140 + out here on open speed limits.

VDO, Smiths and Auto Meter all make Speedos in KMH for the European and Asia Pacific markets. I'm pretty sure the ADRs will specify a KMH Speedo.
All of the above Speedos are electronic and you will be able to use them with the standard hall effect sender in the T56. You can then calibrate them for your gearing and tyre size. It's pretty simple, I think the VDO one is calibrated by driving the car over a measured 2KM and pressing a set button at the start and finish. Leeroy just got himself some very nice guages with Cobra logos on their faces. He might post some better pics in his gallery If we ask him. I'm thinking about using the Auto Meter guages myself. Originally I looked at using 2nd hand Jaguar gauges as it would have been a bit cheaper. I was told that I could not use tyhe speedo because current ADR's require a 6 digit odometer and the old gauges only have 5.

Yep...I can confirm that both Aussie Mike and cameron02 are correct..ie..must be KLM and the odometer must read to 6 digits.
I just bought some VDO night vision..100mm tach and speedo...50mm mechanical temps (oil & water) electric everything else. They are white on black faces with a black bezel and are not too different from the smith or SW originals. After rego I'll have a gauge fella change the faces to something more original and the bezels to chrome. The only problem is the odometer is a digital LCD in a little window on the bottom of the speedo face.....Think I'll put up with that. I selected VDO because they do work rather well and rumoured to be fairly reliable and accurate. Whats the use of original looking gauges if they lie. %/ :D |

:3DSMILE: Roger Howard at Howard Instruments in Northern Rd, Heidelberg, Melbourne is currently making VDO instruments using the Smith faces. You may possibly be able to see them on my dash photo. %/ They were very reasonably priced , with all of the sender units they cost me under $1400. Just returned from snowbound Europe and finally found 5 minutes to click onto the site.
If its any help, all guages in the UK have MPH & KPH marked on - probably as the majority of new cars are "European". Once I find some time I will post further info of my Lotus Elise ride including pics of it wrapping around a tree - messy! Good job we weren't in a Cobra as I think the tree would also have been damaged. |
