Chassis Building

Does anyone do a body, and let you build the chassis? I have a mate that does large scale projects with steel, so what i'd need is a plan and body to fit it to. Any thoughts??

Nathan - if you're planning on building a track-only Cobra, I'm sure a few of the manufacturers would sel you a body alone.

If you're planning on registering the car, there are WAY TOO MANY reasons why not to build your own chassis. Submitting engineer's drawings for the chassis design, including every stupid little bracket, door hinges, side intrusion, roll bar mounting points, suspension design and materials would keep you poor. Then you'd have to have an engineer do a beaming and torsional testing on the finished chassis. Then you're off to hire a racetrack to undergo braking and suspension testing.

....or - you pay a few grand more than the bare body cost and know that you're buying a fully engineered and complianced chassis without all the headaches...

Thats what I was figuring, but figured it couldn't hurt to ask!

Thanks!

You can buy a set of chassis plans from Cobra Restorers I believe, FWIW.

In most cases I've seen where the manufacturer will sell the chassis separate from the body the chassis is relatively cheap. For example you can buy the Classic Revival chassis is AU$3,530 where as the body is AU$6,750. For the effort involved in setting up a jig to hold everything straight then buying all the steel, making all the brackets, welding it all together and getting it engineered you won't be saving a lot of money.

A known good chassis will probably be a factor in resale too. You will also have a wealth of set up knowledge to draw on from others who run the same chassis.

Cheers
