dba rotors

G'day All

My RCM uses a shortened Jag front end. Instead of replacing the disks with factory replacements I am considering using dba "Gold Series" rotors. The gold series are a direct replacement part that are one peice, cross drilled & slotted.

Has anyone running Jag front ends used these dba disks before & how do they compare to the factory disk?

Cheers
:)

I used them on my Series 2 Jaguar a few years ago, they worked fine but squealed a bit on light application. I have DBA on front of my Cobra but as it hasn't been fired in anger yet cannot comment on how they will work on Cobra, at least there wont be too many light application of the brakes.

Regards,

Phil

Phil, I thought you went with Ian's big brake option?

NASSTY, You can always drill standard rotors yourself. The latest thing I've been reading is that drilled rotors aren't reccomended for fronts because of the potential for cracks. Slotting suposedly is a better option. I drilled and slotted my fronts but I doing it again I'd probably just slot them.

I've got a fixture I made for the mill to cut excentric circlular slots on the discs like the new high perf brake package on the new falcons. There are some pics in my gallery. I can slot you a set for a reasonable price if you're interested.

hey mike nice rotos.....
l was wondering were did you get those inner ac caps

Aussie Mike 02-18-2004 12:44 AM

Thanks Alvin, I machined up the caps from billet Aluminium but the AC logo in the center is a self adhesive badge I got from Finish Line in the US.

Haven't spoken to you in ages. How's your car progressing?

Cheers

nearly finished just doing some small stuff before the motor comes back!!!!!
Cant wait she goin to go hard!!!!!
and hows things with your car going??

NASSTY 02-18-2004 06:22 PM

Thanks Guys for the info.

I'm also considering replacing solid rear disks on my Jag rear end with ventilated disks. I've done some surfing on the net; some kits seem better than others but again, has anyone done it? Is it really worth doing? I can understand people changing to ventilated disks for an XJ6 or XJS but a cobra is almost half the weight.

Cheers,

I think the problem with Jag rear discs on a Cobra is more that the air cant get to them. On a Jag sedan the floor area in front of the diff and brakes is much more open to air flow. On a Cobra the tub where you sit comes right down in front of the brakes and shields them from much of the airflow under the car. Rather than fitting ventilated discs I'd be looking at trying to duct more air in to the standard solid discs. It shouldn't be too hard to make some ducts down in the air flow and get cool air in to them.

Another option would be to adapt up some Commodore finned aluminium rear calipers and hang them off the back of the diff. The finned callipers should dissapate the heat a bit better and having them mounted on the back will give them a bit more air. Combined with some air ducted to the discs I reckon it would work well. The rear mounted calipers would be much easier to service too.

The only problem I know of with the rear mounted calliper arrangement is what Les mentioned to me. Suposedly there can be a problem with hot brake dust being thrown up towards the underside of the car rather than down towards the road. You may need to consider an aluminium shield to stop the fiberglass floor being dammaged.

Mike,

Ducts are probably the easiest fix. As I understand it there are three main problems with Jag rear disks.

1 As above
2 Hot disks can damage diff seals by radiating heat and through conduction through the drive shafts
3 Leaking diff oil gets onto the disks themselves which makes them useless.

Using ventilated disks at the rear will
1 circulate air to cool down the disks avoiding problems mentioned &
2 If the diff does leak, the oil can travel through the inside of a vented disk and so not getting onto the working surfaces of the disk.

A problem with installing vented disks is clearance with the lower wishbone, although there is plenty of metal to machine off, and the use of a spacer in the caliper for the wider disk.

So, has anyone installed vented disks & if so, have you had any problems doing so?

Thanks in advance,

Al

I was just cruising the gallery and found this picture of a nicely modified Jag rear brake set up. It looks like Wilwood 4 piston callipers rear mounted on standard solid discs.

Hi Steve,

Probably should have started a new thread for this one.

Late last year Shane Beikoff Racing were selling off a Perkins Commodore (v8 Supercar) along with a heap of other goodies including an EL Falcon body built by Stone brothers, selling for only $8000. Also had a couple of 5lt Supercar motors up for sale.

This is an Aussie mobile number so I'm not sure of the prefix you need to use.

Thanks Jason
I will give him a call to see if he knows of any more for sale.

Steve
