Windsor Engine
Strange query, but not being an engine expert I need to know whats involved replacing the oil dipstick with a new one.
The engine is a Windsor 302 (NC). Thanks guys. |
I put a Lokar aftermarket dipstick on my 351W and just found myself sitting on the garage floor w/ my oil pan using what I figured was common sense. Seems to be working out okay, but I'm not sure how scientific my method was.
Basically, I took the oil pan and set it up on the ground and put 6 quarts of water in it (it's a 6 quart pan). I placed the dipstick into the water until the water level was about halfway between the "add" and "fill" lines. I gouged a small notch on the dipstick at the same level as the top of the oil pan (this is also the bottom of the block). Then I went to the front of the rest of the motor and lined the notch up to the bottom of the block. I measured how "too long" the dipstick was based on where I was going to mount the bracket for the dipstick tube, and I cut that much off the top of the dipstick then re-attached the dipstick handle. All I know is that I felt really smart when I was done and had a beer. |
Thanks JP - sounded pretty scientific to me!
However, my issue is not necessarily calibrating the new dipstick, but rather how the casing fits into the pan. I presume there is some sort of seal that may (or may not) need replacing. I don't want to rip the old casing out to find that I have a major hunt trying to find a part that I'm not too sure how to describe to a supplier. Minor job - that may prove to be a major headache! |

They have a chrome dip stick from the ford performance catalogue to fit yours. Far as I know, it is an interference press fit into the block, but they will tell ya how it fits. Now..care to tell me whats goin on in here? Mrs Flatchat posts that second video on her Dyno thread.....and you dont know what to do with ya dip stick!! :D %/ I'm outta here before I get inta trouble ;) ;) |
The tube has no seal other than the press fit. In some cases you can work it out from the top if you are VERY careful. If it has been in for a few years you may have to drop the pan and tap it out from the bottom.

Les - Already got the dipstick (chrome) from our lilo friends in the U S of A ($6.00 US). Will see if I can extract from the top as suggested. |
If it is very tight to pull out, then you can find a steel bar, or pin punch that is a nice close fit inside the tube, then grab the tube where the bar, pin will prevent you from crushing it, hold tight with pliers and twist as you pull it up.
