LS1 verses Lexus V8's
G'day All,
I've been hearing stuff about Lexus motors - how strong they are, good power/technology etc etc but nothing too technical about how to install one in a cobra. I'd like to know what the issues are to install one. Eg, how do you get around the ECU security? do you need to use a lexus steering column? Any clearence problems. How much $$ for a used motor. Engine mods and costs, ADR emission problems? Transmission combos? Wiring problems? Sump clearence? etc etc There is bugger all info, on this forum, about them. I know lots about LS1's and this is my preferred route but I would like to be fully informed when the time comes to install the engine (which will be at the end of my build to aviod any ADR problems). So, are there any Lexus boys who would like to tell all? |
My advice to you is to have a look at one before you do anything else. You need to make sure that you have enough room under the bonnet. Not only height wise but also width wise.
My kit had to be modified to fit it in. The result being narrower footwells. Not by much but enough to notice. These motors also only comply to ADR27. Not the current standard. When you say security, what do you mean? Price varies on these motors. Your best bet would be to buy a Japanese Toyota Crown front half cut. Motor is the same as the Lexus. That way you get the complete setup ie: ECU.,wiring loom. air flow meter etc. I made the mistake of buying a motor only and I ended up spending a lot more to get everything needed to run it. There are a number of places around that specialise in these motors. They modify the standard loom and return it to you with 5 wires exposed. Nothing needs to be done internally due to the motor being extremely over engineered. |

I know a lexus v8 will fit into a RCM. I have seen a RCM roller with one installed. It does require mods to the footwells to fit but it's nowhere near as much as say a Boss 5.4 This roller also used the steering column too, for ease of wiring I think. Did you use a lexus column and ignition? From what you've said, modifying the wiring loom appears to be an easy fix. By security I mean some ECU's require the ignition key/ECU to be matched together or the ECU won't fire up. When you had your loom modified I assume this problem was fixed? As for ADR 79/00, 79/01, I had also heard (but not by an engineer mind you) that the motor would pass. Need to find out more about this! Thanks |
There is no probs with using specific keys. I use a UC Torana steering column and ignition switch.

Take back my support for Ford components. After lieing under the car getting my mits dirty with oil from the tranny, now not sure Ford's are any better than other types:mad: Never seem to have such issues with the Landcruiser (Lexus dirivitive%/ ) |

I think I was a bit too quick to post the LS1 v Lexus V8 thread. On the weekend I test drove a Toyota Soarer V8 and 2000 HSV Clubsport (250kw) back to back. Both were 4 speed autos and about the same weight. Those Soarers aint light weights. There aint no substitute for ci!!! :LOL: :LOL: While the Toyota, being quad cam etc, was smooth and refined it just didn’t have the balls (4.0) out of the box. Powerful yes but it wasn’t a thrill. You would have to spend $$ on supercharging to get the required numbers. I have no doubt that once supercharged it would be an awesome motor. :cool: :cool: The HSV with traction control off was a hoot. Instant wheel spin and oppy loc on takeoffs and bucket loads of grunt. I had a salesman who was encouraging me to give it a bootfull. %/ **) :LOL: :p :D I figure 250kw should be easy reached out the box and this HSV weights 1650kgs and does 0-100km in low sixes. LS1 cobras are going to be faaaaaassssssttttttttt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!! :MECOOL: :MECOOL: :MECOOL: How's the weather up there at the moment? Basically sunshine all the time :cool: Where are you heading to and when. If on the Gold Coast on the first weekend of the month try out Sanctuary Cove - can pass on the future month's planned Cobra events if interested. |

We're heading up to Maloolaba from the 29th June to 16th July. So if I cant work on the cobra at least it would be great to check some out. We were planning to head down to surfers so it would be good to put some faces to names. Please send me the events list.
