Alvin,

Mine has settings for 160, 170, and 180. I run it at 180 as my motor makes more horsepower at 210 -220, so I installed a toggle switch to keep the fans off until the temp. gets to around 210. So depending on your motor and how it is built, you may want yours to come on at a lower temp. It seems that a lot of the people around here have theirs at around 175.

I'm currently working on a pendulum switch, it will fit in the brake duct and switch on when you slow down/stop, it switches off when your moving, the wind brakes the connection. Never liked the thermo switches, had a couple go bad.

My thermostat opens at 180F, and the fans come on at 190F. On winter mornings, the fans don't come on at all as the water in the radiator comes into the motor at about 150F. The guage just keeps moving from 150 to 180 and back as the thermostat opens and closes.

Pendulum switch

Maybe you could include some style of mercury switch rather than a pendulum. Then all the workings are enclosed.
Another idea could be a gearbox switch on first gear (like the reverse to tail lights) then when you slip into first the fan kicks on!!! :)

I have my fan wired to a toggle switch. The only
time my Cobra starts getting close to 200 is if I
am at a light or in slow traffic - at which time I
just turn it on and it drops it to 170-180. Now
I just turn it on if I know I'm going to be sitting
at lights a bit and turn it off when I hit the freeway.
I'm used to watching gauges from flying so that's no
problem. Kiss.

Mine comes on about 180. Not sure if it is good or bad, but at least she don't cook!!

I hate engines that overheat. Must be a hangover from my Datsun Bluebird days.....

Alvin 07-04-2004 05:38 AM

sloth try the datsun 1600 days with a sr20 turbo!!!!!
is that about 80 c temp????

I agree with Craig. Get the ECU to kick the fans in at about 85C.

With a 75- 80 degree thermostat your engine temps on the move will be below the point where the fans will come on. They should only start up in traffic when there isn't enough airflow.

Cheers
