Wiring Issues / Advice
Just to keep in touch with my ongoing wiring issues.
Fixed all instrumentation except for speedo, which is not good as the VSS communicates with the auto!!!! Time to call in an expert, who is in the process of tracing the problem back to a loose connector. The reason for the thread is that for those boys out there building, DON'T SKIMP ON THE WIRING. To me it has become the most annoying part of the car and was simply a messy job in the first place:mad: I am now in the process of re-wiring the wiring to a standard that easy to trace future issues. Do it right the first time and avoid major frustration down the track. |
Pete,
I`ll put that in the 'Must Have' list & not the 'Wish I Had' list. **) Nick |
Pete, Totally agree with what your saying. There is nothing more frustrating to have electrical faults and a lousy wiring job to sift thru to find the problems
This time around I have used a Painless 12 circuit harness. Comes with a small but very sturdy fuse panel and all wires are colour coded and marked every 300 mm from where they come and to where they go. Excellent product. Another thing I cant recommend highly enough is the use of relays on heavy draw components, like cooling fans and fuel pumps. The small cost of relays is easily justified with longer life from your switches. Pete, Hope you eventually get that thing sorted. |
My dilema is do I rip everything out and start again or simply replace as a problem arises?
I prefer the latter alternative as if I rip out I may miss something when hooking back up. I guess I need to build up a relationship with my auto sparky. |
Painless is Painless
PCC: I just started a complete rewiring job last night. 12 Circuit Painless Main harness with a guage harness supplement. We're ripping everything out and going from scratch. It's a "follow the bouncing ball" with the Painless and it's the path of least resistance. My wiring's 25 years old anyway and it had band aides all over it, and you just reach a point where you're putting patches on patches. Switches were getting hot and I had a double fan melt down for incentives. $145 for the main harness and $60 the guage harness. You can trace any future problems easily and you'll sleep better too.

Oi...Whats this bouncing ball thing...I didn't get one of them. ;) :D  :p
What page of the manual is it on? :JEKYLHYDE :MECOOL: I think he's havin a go at ya Pete. |
Latest on the wiring front.....
Speedo head dead (no 8.2V coming from the unit). Not recomended drawing 12V. I heard that fixing such wizardry will cost me in the order of $400, whereas as the wreckers option is in the oder of $250 for the same cluster. Option 2 I think:mad: Anyone want a AUI cluster (only 11,000 clicks showing)? Oh to have "old" style gauges:rolleyes: |
