Engine options...

Any one know if its possible fitting the BOSS-290 in to classic chasy?

What are the dimensions of the BOSS-290?

What are the dimensions of the engine bay in classic chassy?

simon clemens 07-14-2004 05:04 AM

stasik A4, the Boss 302 dimensions are:
24.5 inches wide
29 inches long
28.5 high
500lbs weight

I'd imagine that the 290 would be the same dimensions in length & width, the height maybe 1/2inch shorter

Hope this helps in some way?

The Boss 290 is a monster of a motor. Those DOHC heads make the whole thing about 900mm wide. They are pretty heavy too since they still run a cast iron block.

That said it would still be an awesome motor in a Cobra. Of all the Cobras out there the Classic Revival is probably one of the few it would fit in. Hving a wider spacing on it's rails and no bar work in the engine bay will give you a bit of room to move. I would say the foot boxes would definitely need modification to clear the heads as you have to with a 4.6 mustang motor.

Speak to Ian at Classic about it. If you can supply a motor and box I'm sure he can probably build the car to fit the motor.

Don't forget the Dark Side though. I saw another 2 chassis in Ians workshop last week with LS1 mounts on them.

Cheers

The dark side would be my last hope.....

The note of the BOSS-290 compare to Ls1 is much nicer for my liking....

Ill be sending email accross to Ian for his Oppinion on this whole thing... see what he says....

It wont be long and the dark side may outnumber those guys useing boat anchors.
In Australia at least.

By the way, did I mention Ford engines are really good?

You did, but why let facts get in the way of a good old fashioned %#& stir.. :3DSMILE:

One issue that noone has mentioned is cost

Gen3 start at $6K-6.5 used incl loom and computer or just bloke and heads new with another $1K for loom and computer.

Boss 290 - there are no crate motors available but I have heard that there are are some people asking FPV to make crates available. We'll wait and see.

However used Boss 290's or even 260's are asking around $14 gorillas - ouch!

You can build a fantastic LS1 for that $$

Cheers

If you seriously want to go with a DOHC Ford, I think the best option would be to import a wrecked 2003 Mustang Cobra. Something that's had a good value punt up the rear, with engine bay intact.

Quad cam, 32 valve, supercharged !!!!!

What about lexus all alloy quad cam? six bolt mains, factory steel crank etc......

STASIK A4 07-16-2004 08:47 PM

That mustang engine looks good....Any one know of it measurements?and if it will fit in to Clasic Kit?

Also how will it go with geting it registed? and passing immisions?

Aussie Mike 07-16-2004 10:37 PM

Yep, the 4.6 mustang motor will fit in a Classic. Ian has already done one but he did have to trim the tops of the foot boxes to squeeze it in since it's a wide motor.

Note the original Robnel chassis was made to take a 429 big block but when they went for the 4.6 motor had to change it and widen the bar work in the engine bay to fit the tubby little 4.6 in. I think they also set the 4.6 motor a little bit further forward as well.

The guys in the US are getting good numbers out of these Quad Cam motors with a bit of forced induction.

Eagle have got a special on at the moment for new 4.6 crate motors with a new tremec 5 speed behind it. $AU9,900 from memory. It's not the supercharged version but I reckon that's a pretty good deal for a brand new motor and box.

Find yourself an engineer for the project before you invest in a motor. The Vic laws may be changing to still allow the 4.6 for a while longer but your engineer will know for sure.

I just purchased a Boss 260 kw BA XR8 (quad cam)from a wrecker for $1700(for charlie cash) with 190kms and all accessories included. It had a auto. I bought aT3650 Five speed manual gearbox for $350. The clutch pak (includes flywheel) was bought for $790. Please note six speed gearboxes are in fashion but expensive if you are building on a budget. The Boss 260 KW is super heavy and very wide and I will have to modify my RMC foot boxes. The rear cover dimensions are 720mm. I suspect that the engine will sit forward .Another headache. In view of this information the prices for the engine/transmission has dropped significantly .

Come over to the dark side  LS is light, cheap and makes more HP with just about anything you throw at it.
The Ford modular engines are awesome, but often very restrictive when it comes to a Cobra unfortunately.;)
Ha!! Just realised this thread had been dug up from 2004..
That's gotta be a record!!
