Oil Coolers

Advice, after the event so to speak....

I've had a separate tranny oil cooler fitted in lieu of the previous radiator combined unit.

My tranny guy (no Les he is straight!) recommended it from an efficiency point of view - cooler oil longer tranny life.

From a functional point of view, was it worth it on a car that might not do any trackwork?

Personally, after having my gearbox rebuilt a more efficient form of oil cooling makes good sense and gives the car more of an original look.

Any opinions?

Pete...

My only concern is that lubricants need to reach and maintain a
" certain" temperature to provide the required lubrication properties.

I'd be more concerned with finding what temp the oil achieved before I committed to a cooler which may in fact cause your oil to not reach operating temps.

Then again..you can get thermo oil bypass thingys which wont pass the oil to a cooler until a certain temp is reached.

You may well be installing a cooler because it looks Kewl.

Thanks Les,

I'll check on the inline thermostat thingimajig when I go and pick it up.

My concern before was that the tranny oil was cooking (on gas so to speak) so was concerned that the existing rad system was not coping.

Time will tell.

Thanks again;)

Peter - are you running a higher stall convertor than standard? If so, these significantly increase the trans fluid temps. The guy that built the Powerglides for both my cars basically says that you can't go wrong with the biggest trans cooler possible. Greater volume, cooler temps, happier trans. My trans temps are generally around 190F, with engine oil around 200F. You might find your engine runs a few degrees cooler without having the trans fluid routed through the radiator.

Is your car back together yet?

I believe the viscosity of ATF is pretty similar hot or cold. That being the case I probably wouldn't bother with the extra complexity of a thermostat to control the flow through the cooler.

Cheers

Cooked trans. fluid stinks and is dark red to brown.

You'll know if one is needed:LOL:

Gear box fixed:) including new:

Torque convertor, frictions, solonoids, front band, C2 Piston, bearings, C4 Cushion Plate, output case, speedo sender, C4 Hub & race, selas & gaskets etc etc etc; and

a separate oil cooler**)

Dry as a bone underneath - How it should be.

Now shifts when its supposed to and feels snug and tight!

Well worth the money.

Oh and Bern, the light guards are on too.

What next..............

Rear suspension I think.

By the time I finish, it'll be a good car to buy:D

Rebel1 09-15-2004 05:39 PM

Pete....will that cooler pull down the temp of a slab of crownies??

Not worth it if it doesn't

PCC 09-15-2004 05:51 PM

Les,

Hmmm, new Point 15 on the list - a crownie cooler in the boot - handy when you meet up with your friends.

Just got to find the friends;)
