Engineer results (reposted due to loss of thread)
Took the beast to the engineer on Friday and passed except for one thing. I have to fit an immobiliser, I will get that fitted this week then Rego.

YEs, mums car does have an immobilser... all new cars have them...
You try opening the car with the key rather than the fob, then starting the car with the the infrared bit, it will run for about 15 sconds, then cut out... If it doesnt happen, try it in your ute, it will be more likely to happen. Todd Knight |
maybe you're right Bernie...but...my post in the lost thread had to do with the legal definition of an imobiliser.
Whats wrong with just a hidden switch in the starting system somewhere??. Not being critical but thats what I would have done at the time to get full compliance. Whilst the engineer was looking at other things...I would have raced down to dick smith/jarcar and bought a switch. Tis good news you're almost there Flip. Cheers |
I have a hidden battery isolating switch but was told that that was not suitable it had to be a coded immobiliser, probably not a bad idea to fit one, it just puts me back a week or two.

My understanding was that a car that is efi'd an isolator switch (such as a battery isolator) is illegal - hidden or otherwise. All new cars must be fitted with an immobiliser of some sort. Watch out for insurance - I know Shannon's require proof that an immobiliser is fitted (and it needs to be a recognised type) prior to reducing theft excess. All of the above may be unique to QLD that being we're all different countries in one:rolleyes: if you know what I mean! |
Getting close Phil. Does anyone know the deal on stamp duty when you first reg. your cobra. How do they determine the value of the car for s/duty. I dumbied my s/duty on a Hatchback Torana back in the 80's and they got me 5 years later by seeing what I had paid through the dodgy caryard and I was hit with a fine:CRY: Hate to see vicroads get the last laugh!!

Excellent point Leeroy, I've been trying to work out a value for stamp duty,too low and they will grab you too high and your ripping yourself off. I'm open to any suggestions. Same as you a car yard undervalued a car I purchased to cut down on stamp duty (I thought it was a good idea at the time) and I also copped a fine.

Personally, I would have thought the majority of builds would be in the $40 to $50k cost mark and that would tie in with most insurance values for replacement (for those who insure their Cobra's). I know when I bought my Cobra from the guy who built it, duty was something I completely forgot about (having only bought new cars in the past). At the time I was a little p#$$%d off. No wonder the State Governments are rolling in cash (what with duty and GST!) |

In NSW if you have built the car they will probably want to see the invoices for parts so the RTA can determin a price. Just a note on there computer listing of car values cobras start at $30,000 so if you tell them less a red flag will come up on there system straight away. I now from experiance. Craig W:confused: |
Thanks Craig, I will not be able to take the wife when I go to vicroads in case they ask me how much it has cost to build. She is amazed that you can build a cobra for $25k !!!!

My wife thinks mine cost 15k to build and thats what I told the NSW RTA. They didn't raise an eyebrow.
