Hot Engine
My oil temp is a bit warm at the moment   its OK on the highway but crap in the city. Looks like I need to fit an Oil cooler any suggestions on size and manufacturers.

What do you consider to be warm? What oil or you using, and probably just as importantly, what brand of gauge? How much does it heat up in the city? What are your water temps on city and highway drives?
|
Craig, Your asking a lot of questions so here goes... Oil temp around city traffic is about 120 - 125C the oil I am using is Mobil XHP, the guage is VDO and the water temps on city are up to 120 on highway 80 any suggestions?

Suggestions? Yeah - move somewhere cooler !!!! VDO gauges are generally very accurate. Assuming those city temps are right, you definitely need to make some changes. Oil and water temps at or above 120 cannot be sustained. In fact, many motors would have pretty ordinary head gaskets after temps like that, but the windsor motors can seem to cope with overheating better than others (LS1s for example - that'll get them talking...)
An oil cooler is obviously going to make a worthwhile difference to oil temps, but I'm still concerned about the difference between city / highway driving. You don't have any engine bay photos in your gallery, so I'm not sure if you have shrouding around the radiator. Are you sure the water pump is the correct rotation for your year motor, because standard and reverse rotation pumps can physically bolt onto either timing cover. Fans verified to be switching on at correct temps? So many variables, but one thing is for sure - 120+ is too high !!! |
And ...
Radiator fans checked to be configured proper..My 16" davis craig came delivered as a pusher fan...had to flip (pun intended) the blades to act as a puller fan. Stuck thermostat...are there holes in the thermostat valve to allow water to flow while cold but the thermostat still not opening fully when hot. As Craig said..too many variables. Check the flow thru the radiator first...that might give a start point. Best of luck |
Thanks guys I'll do a bit more work. i had the same problem with Davis Craig the fans sucked instead of blowing !!!!!!!!!!
