Wiring is like gyprocking, leave it to the experts.

You wouldn't believe how fast electricity is when you are trying to get the terminal off the battery before the wire you shorted out goes up in smoke:CRY: :CRY:

You can get premade looms that are economical and all marked up but may need alterations to fit neatly.

I still think its best to save money elsewhere. You will save a lot more by good buying and using the experience gained by others on this site.

Save money by going around all the time and hassling the painter, auto electrician etc.

Where did you source the painless kit? I've checked their website (afterall they're a CC sponsor!) and they looked the goods. I've installed my fair share of ICE so I'm not perturbed doing it myself assumming installing ICE is enough experience to make sense of the painless kit.

Any major wiring work should only be done by someone who KNOWS what they are doing.

As said before, its the first area I would look at when buying such a car especially when it has been privately built.

Spend the dosh and do it right the first time.

Hey Al.....there are two harness kits I would recommend.

The painless of course. 12 or 18 circuit. use GM color codes.

Either are excellent kits.I used the painless because the fuse box was smaller and I didn't want 18 circuits. Sadly I should have used the Ron Francis one as he has a ford color code harness. :LOL:

I got my painlessfrom some performance shop in Sydney....cant find the invoice to advise you but should not be hard to find. They have full page ads in the V8 performance mags.

Let me also say this.....A couple of mates have had professional wiring....behind the dash was neat but a bluddy mess when you got in and had a look. All terminals were crimpted and some were poorly done. One had intermittant problems and the fault was bluddy difficult to find.

As mentioned, I used Painless.....the color codes are easy to follow...the wires are prefitted to the fuse box....and just run out to the ends....all you do is run them to where ya want....terminate them....hook them up...prove the system works....then run them as neatly as you want...then cut and reterminate....I also crimped and soldered all terminals and used shrink tube.

The Ron Francis kit works the other way...he starts at the other end and works towars the fuse box....every wire in the kit has a matching terminal at the fuse box......how easy is that?

Dont cut any wires until you have them routed where ya want em.

Certainly, I had some gauge wiring to do behind the dash but anyone can wire instruments. Painless provides all the fused and hot feeds to the dash.

Simple...really easy....and.....By doing it yaself....you will know it backwards...any problems and you know where to look. They certainly remove the mystery of wiring a car.

All I was meaning before was do it right the first time and forget all of the woes down the track.

You know its a pet hate of mine. Nothing worse than tracing a wire through six different colour code changes especially when these cars only result in a bad back from lieing in strange positions for long lengths of time.

Its bad enough getting hold of schematics for two different cars in one, but bloody different coloured / changing wires - please:confused:

Touch wood - I seem to have restored reliability to the cruising machine.

Still think I'll do it myself. Not to save money, but to do it the way I want it done. If I take it to an auto electrician they're not going to put in the effort of keeping it all tidy like I would. And if I asked them to, the bill would be higher than Pauls initial one! On top of that, I'll still want to rearrange it. So I may as well buy the painless or the ron francis kit and see how I go.

Tell ya what.....the first time I hooked the battery charger to the main feed wires to test the system was some experience.

high beam......oops..is that high or low....look at bulb....yet..tis high...wow.
Hazards...well $%#$ me ....looky at that..they all flash.....but faster.

Check out the Street Rod magazines at the library - sorry newsagents. There's a few adds in them for Painless'. TCR in Melbourne etc.

I will be getting a painless wireing kit aswell, the only question I have is which kit to buy?
how many circuits are needed?
1. right turn
2. Left turn
3. Park lights
4. Low beam
5. High beam
6. Hazzard lights
7. Seat belt warning
8. Hand brake warning
9. Brake fluid warning
10. Reverse lights
11. Interior blower fan/Demister
12. Engine cooling fan
13. Fuel pump
14. Numerous dash gauges (how many circuits in that?)
15. Brake lights
16. Starting
17. Chargeing
etc etc
I am sure alot of these circuits are doubled up in some cases but I am wondering does the painless kit come with like a wireing diagram that explains all these circuits?

Boxhead..because you've got that funny motor and will use an elec fuel pump..then you may need an 18 circuit.

You will end up with some spare circuits you wont need, like cruise control, power windows etc.

Painless also have a modular fusebox available if you want to attempt a bit more of the hands on wiring,neat unit with all the fuses designated the correct ccts
its a 12 cct and I think I had a few spares.
Looks way better than the autobarn style blade holders but a fair bit more expensive....
rare spares and american autos in sydney stock them...

Wow! I paid $395 for a 12 circuit Painless Wiring kit. I put in it myself in about two hours. This included wiring all of the gauges and lights. I think you were ripped off royaly!

Art, $395 US = about $527 AUD

On top of this add import duty, sellers markup and goods and service tax.
