Jag Diff Conversion 3.07 to 3.54

G'day!

I've got a S3 XJ6 rear end. The diff is an open spinner 3.07 ratio.

This ratio is too low for the AOD I will use so I need to lower the ratio to 3.54.

I've sourced the gear set and carrier for a 3.54 LSD from a XJ40, used for $450.

I know stuff all about Jag diffs but the seller tells me I can convert the open spinner 3.07 to 3.54 LSD using the diff housing of the 3.07.

Is this correct? I don't want to waste $450!

The conversion is not something I will do myself.

Thanks in advance
:)

He is right, the housings are the same.

...just occurred to me: although the lsd/open casings are the same I have heard that there are two styles of pinion shaft and they need a housing to match. I am not sure of the accuracy of this info, but I believe there are two different ways in which the shimming of the pinion is done, one with a collapsable spacer and the other with shims and for this the casing and the pinion must be of the same type. This may be complete nonsense, it is only hearsay...

Thank Phil and mylesdw

I called VA Spiteri. They confirmed you can use the guts of a XJ40 3.58 (as apposed to eariler 3.54) and fit it to a S3 XJ6 3.07 diff housing but it does require some fiddling with shims to make it work. But it is doable and they can do it.

I can reccomend the guys at Trans Diffs and Gears in Mahoneys Road Thomastown. They helped me out with my GTS diff conversion and were good operators. They do the 9" diffs for Brocks Monaro so they can't be too bad.

Cheers

I went from 3.07 to 3.54 back in 2000.
I have a c10 auto (same gear ratio as an AOD without the overdrive.)
I went straight back to the 3.07.
1st gear wasn't worth using, it was just way to high.
If I had an AOD, I'd be looking at a 3.31 LSD.

Maybe speak to Trevor Simkin in Shepparton, he has had all 3.
When he had the 3.54s at Heathcote he would always start the drags in second gear.
If you only have 4 gears why throw one away?
Give me a call if you want a chat about it.
