Victorian unfinished cobra builds

Hi to all Victorian cobra builders,

This is my first go at starting a thread so please don't shoot me if it does not work, that also goes for the info below as it is my understanding from a quick call to my engineer. Further comment most welcome.

For those of us that will not complete our cobra’s before the end of this year, it may be beneficial to contact your VAS approved engineer and sign a contract (application) which will allow and additional 3 years to complete your car if using a non Euro 2 spec motor to comply with ADR 79/00.
If you plan using a ‘04 build motor I believe it is not an issue where as it will be if using a post ’97 build Australian engine or post ’92 American build engine with pre ’05 stamped chassis.

Apparently this has already happened in New South Wales, not sure about the other states in Oz. Check with your engineer for your state or territory.

My understanding is there’s no legal obligation to use the engineering services on signing, it’s basically a application to indicate you have started your project and save the expense of buying a new engine.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.

Dale. :)

I have spoken to my engineer about the 3 year extension. He knows nothing about it. He said get it in writting from Vic Roads.

I rang Vic Roads. The person I spoke to said I had another 3 years and that the original time likit was for Car building companies only not for individually constructed vehicles. I said "can you put that in writting for me" He declined.

I have emailed and written a letter to Eric Howard (GM of Vic Roads) asking for clarification.

Whilst I am waiting for a reply. Does anybody out there have it in writting from Vic Roads? If so then please tell me how you did it because my cars still not ready and I'm getting scared

Hi Cameron

I'd suggest ringing a couple of other approved engineers and see what they have to say. Mine is sending out some forms to sign as we speak which basically has the engine and chassis number on it.
Like your self, I knew nothing of this a couple of weeks ago and it could end up being a costly oversight if not acted on.

Hope you have some luck and let us know the outcome.

Cheers
Dale.

Cameron, after recently getting reg. on my cobra I can sympathise with your worries. My engineer said that if you have engaged an engineer from the time you have purchased the major items (engine/chassis/body) this will qualify the beginning of your start date then giving you the 3yr period. He seemed very sure of this and I beleive he is very much up to date on this. Send me a PM and I will give you his details.
Cheers Leeroy
