I saw this FAI 289 at as show the Vic Cobra club put on and I have forgotten the story that went with it.:(
I do remember that it is the only replica fully endorsed by CS himself and carries a CSX number.
Here are a couple of pics.

Bryan

Based on there being say 5 originals in Aus and basing there being approx 1,000 originals still being around and based upon the population of a western orientated country (alot of bases I know).....

one could deduce that there are approx 500 originals in the US and say 250 in the UK and the remaining around the world SA, Europe etc etc.

I wonder whether or not that is the case.

Thanks Guys - I now know there are definitely more than 3 in Oz as I did think previously.

Good info.

They are out there

Mick the owner of the above Cobra turned up at the recent Victorian Cobra Club display. It was built by John Olsen in New Zealand.

You may recal David the owner of the red car above saying he owned it also prior to selling to Mick who runs a motor cycle repair and sales business.

At one stage David had the two Cobras, along with a very large Ferrari collection.

I'm told the status of the light blue Cobra is that it was endorsed by CS somehow and built under the Shelby banner by Olsen.

No doubt someone will clear that up. It was good to get the two guys along with their cars...**)

Keep the photos and information rolling in..**)

Berrie,

I have a neighbour who owns an AC cobra ( I do not think it is a CSX) which was imported for the UK a long time a go. I think it is a 1968.
It is a geniune AC, alloy body, big block, black, active side pipes:D :D Probably does not qualify for your search as no Shelby input.

SAAC listing

Raises an interesting question - are the COB series cars listed on SAAC, or only CSX?

400TT 03-14-2005 06:01 PM

Even though Bernie indicated only CSX in title, I've been including COB prefixed Cobras. With only just over 1000 all up including COB/COX prefixed cars, I thought we wouldn't get many cars if we just listed CSX prefixed ones. And I think most people appreciate COB prefixed cars.

Snaken, will have to see if you can find out the chassis number of that big block. It could be a COB, I've read somewhere that they did produce a few big block cars with COB prefix.

Ralph, SACC only car about Shelby cars, so only track CSX prefixed cars. They do track the new CSX labelled cars.

Cool. :) SAAC should update their forms though. All the Cobra forms look like they are hard coded with CSX prefix.

I saw a pastel yellow 289 cobra at an auction in flemington rd melb , it was about 28 years ago, at an auction for unique cars .
I spoke to the owner, who said he wanted $40,000

I have also seen a red 427 at the geelong speed trials ,back in about 1992 ,it had the typical stone dings poking up from the inside of the front guards, it was great just to hear it idleing away,no idea what numbers they were.

I was just told that a blue 'real' 427 Cobra was at the Speed Trials in Geelong.

This car has an outline of a map of Australia on the passenger door.

I have emailed the organiser Gary Grant to see if I can find out any additional details.

HEY BERNIE !

That blue cob, 2nd post into the thread, is a car that was reveiwed in classic car mag back in dec 1995. It was then owned by David Ratcliffe (an MG repairer)who had owned this car for 17 years at that time. it was also noted that the photographer asked why the body had not been restored , the reply was,why bother ,it would not be worth any more (hence the sale price)
Another interesting fact is that it has ROBNELL wheels on the front axle ,because of the corrosion of the original magnesium wheels
It is also the same car photographed along side the classic revival advertisement in the snake tales mag...........

Bill I remember the article. I think the owner was away and his brother drove the Cobra.

They would not let the journalist drive the Cobra as a previous journalist had driven it and given it a bad write up.

..same article

There out there..

I still have that magazine at home.

BMK 03-17-2005 04:13 PM

Boxhead

Yes I went looking for it. Found it.

Its looks like the same article on the Ratcliffe Cobra and some comparisons and basic write up.

The owner idicates that its his retirement fund. Now its sold I guess he is retired...
