Mini fans
Hey there again everyone.
Some of you will have heard me ranting on before about my stepfathers works mini, well it has now been featured in a magazine article. Here is a link to the article for those that are interested. http://www.autofan.com.au/index.php?id=52 Bernie make sure that you let Todd know about it, he may have seen the magazine allready for all I know. I did tell Todd alittle about it while at Goulburn. |
I remember those little things giving the likes of Norm Beechy and Bob Jane absolute hell at Lakeside.
The big V8's would power away up the straights but the Mini's would be all over them in the twisties. Great racing in those days. Norm Beechey would drive flat out with one arm on the window sill. |
Original Mini Coopers, especially the "S" models, were AWESOME cars on a tight road course. HARD to beat by any standards AND they looked SO COOL. I owned an 850 Mini and it was a sheer blast to drive. It'd spin doughnuts with ease. I scared the heck out of a newer Corvette one day when I took a sharp right hand corner at over 40MPH (he was sitting in the opposite lane waiting to turn left at the light and I know he thought I was going to T-bone his 'Vette, BUT I just zipped around the corner and went merrily on my way. You should have seen the look of "sheer terror" on his face. It was one of those "priceless" moments:o)

Les - Dad took some 8mm film of the race meeting where Ken Miles was racing the Cobra at Lakeside in '65. There's some footage of the Minis smoking the front tyres coming out of Carousel. Oh, to have been around to see that era of racing. Great stuff !!!
Box - your stepdad is a lucky man to own a bit of genuine motorsport history. |
Craig, I can remeber back in 1979 being 10 years old and climbing through that car pretending to ba a race driver, of course it didnt look as pretty then.

I'm over at Todd's place on his computer so will let him know about the article. Think it is Craig Watson from Leopold in Geelong that may have taken the photos and written the article. He has recently covered the All Ford Day in one of the Ford Performance type magazines. You will have a package at work on Tuesday - dogs. Todd has his Mini on my Gallery photos. Bernie |
Thanks for the little dogs Bernie, Ronda will be over the moon.
I was at the local Macca's today and they are sold out of the dogs. |
Dad mentioned this in a brief "Oh yeah, boxhead posted something about MINI's for you"
I only just had a chance to have a look! Is it the red one on the cover?? Todd |
Yeah thats the one Todd.
There is also an article about the car in the magazine. |
Here's a photo of my 970S Mini that we raced in SCCA D Sedan in the mid 60's.
We won our very first race with the car. From what I am told it is still around somewhere racing in vintage events. http://users2.ev1.net/~BBobC/mini_coop.jpg Terry |

I may have not been around as an "oldie", but I certainly owned a Cooper S and a 1275GT in the late 70's.
Both used more oil than petrol, but wohhhhh loose your oponent by dropping a gear round a corner and loose him in a haze of smoke!!! Best cars I've ever owned. Value for money fun. Excellent. Driving a mini - drive hard into a corner and forget your brake.... just drive harder - works!! |
The current Mini Copper dominates G/S and H/S in SCCA Solo 2 Competition. We got trounced by a dozen of them at Nationals last year. Very tough to beat on a National level, although we have, on a few occasions taken the stick to them at local and regional meets.

Les and Bryan - I notice that a few old guys are into Cobras these days. I am in the process of turning everyone's quick-jacks upside down so the walking sticks can be stored there !!! ;)
Cal - what are you driving in the SCCA category? |
Now why didn't I think of that Craig? :)
Also be able to hook the wheel chair to em ;) Craig, It's called mid life crisis. Thats like when the anatomical bits are gettin worn out.....from OVERWORK. Ear ya heart out mate :D :D :D |

I don't know about attaching your wheelchair to them, but it looks like Rockey Keyes has driven over some in his 8 second Cobra. Some people have no respect for their elders.....
