CR lower control arm and steering rack
Help, I fixed my rack in position today, and I clearly have done something wrong. Now I know the end of the control arm fouls the steering rack boot, but mine is really fouling, so much so that its catching on the joint inside the boot and not allowing it to go lock to lock (this is with 20mm spacers as well). I think I have the washer\bush layout wrong with the lower pivot bolt. Churchy sent me a pic, and les also reckons I had it right, but I still needed to put 2 extra washers on the end, otherwise the castleated nut screwed on past the hole. Now I believe there are too "large hole" washers, and one "small hole" washers for each side, all with indents on one face. What is the assembly order using standard rubber bushes. I currently have (threaded onto the pivot bolt), Bush, large hole washer, through chassis, large hole washer, bush, small hole washer, nut. Do i just need a couple of extra washers on first (instread of at the end) so that will bring the end of the bolt forward. Also which way do the indents on the washers face?
thanks in advance :) |
I think the indents in the washer are suposed to go towards the bush as they are designed to grip the crus tube and stop the bush rotating. If you are using nolathan bushes the indents don't matter so much as the bush runs in grease and is designed to slip.
From memory I'm running the bolt through the bush then a washer and then a 6mm aluminium spacer. Through the cross member then another washer the bush another washer then the castle nut. The nut still rubs on the rack gator but not enough to be a problem. Cheers |
Thanks Mike. The comprehensive build manual mentions the 6mm spacer for nolothane, not the standard rubber jag? Which are you using?
Cheers. |
Nolothane (or equivalent brand), They were reasonably cheap to buy @ around $40 for the set from memory.

OK. I was a bit worried about the ride being a bit harsh on nolothane? (when in reality time onthe track will be pretty small) thats why I had gone for standard jag. Sooooo....anyone out there using the standard jag lower bushes thats had the same prob as me?
Cheers. |
I'll Take more Photo's
Andrew, mine are pretty close, but do not foul on the rack. The boots rub, but they only indent the boot a small amount. I will jack it up and take some more photo's with the wheels off. I am using the standard jag bushes, so it should give you an idea.
Problem, being is if mine is the same, then I may have a problem that I didn't know about :D  |
As it is, I could only go straight or turn right....which is OK for an oval track maybe......:D
Now I know I had a wrong mix on the upper arms, Im starting to wonder if the pivot bolt Might be wrong as well. If its too long I can just space it up the front...I tried 6mm and that seems to free up the rack OK. I hate little stuff like this...like PhilM said...2 steps forward, one step back.. |
