External Boot Hinges

Fitted the battery (in a box) Sunday, its so big - or perhaps the boot is so small - that there is very little room for internal boot hinges.

Have seen a few cobras around with external boot hinges (like those found on an old morris etc).

Other than a wrecker does anyone know where to get them?

Also, any tips on locating the appropriate bonnet (hood) and boot handles/locks would be appreciated.

While we're there - am fitting a battery isolation 'key' to the car - does this meet the requirement for an immobilizer??

thanks

The boot hinges I used are from a Triumph TR2. They are available new from Sports Car World in Girraween Sydney.

The ADR for immobilises stipulates that it must be a 3 stage immobiliser. In NSW at least that is the case. Not sure about other states.

I just bought an imobiliser for mine and I'm plumbing it directly into the wiring loom as I wire it up. I figure it'll make it harder to work out which wires to cut to get the thing going. The imobiliser I bougt uses a small electronic key you touch to a socket in the dash. It has two sets of relay contacts so you can disable the fuel pump and the ECU supply feeds.

It has a hotwire feature that if it detects someone trying to hotwire it ie ignition goes on without disabling it then it sounds the horn. Only cost $100 too.

I figured an alarm was a bit of a waste of time for a car with no locks and no roof.

Immobiliser

There is also your insurance company to concider with an imobiliser, shannons gave a list of models that can be used. They would not insure me unless I had written proof from an accredited installer that it was fitted.

guys, be aware with the imobiliser it must meet certain standards for insurance purposes ie: they will want the make and copy of reciept of install .
the way it was put to me (by shannons) was this is not an alarm must be 3 stage imobilser .

Aussie Mike 04-03-2006 01:10 AM

Mine has an Australian standards sticker on it. I'll check what the number is and get back to you.

Best to check with Shannon's for the current standards. They will quote which Australian Standards it must comply with. Alarm/Immobilisers that comply will definitely have the appropriate Australian Standard listed on them. It's a big deal to the manufacturer/distributer.

It is a moving target and I had quite an ordeal changing insurance to Shannons recently as vehicle only had an immobiliser current at time of registration/completion, no longer compliant. I don't know what they were on, but eventually talked them around.

I understand Austin healey hinges can also be a choice, but learnt this only through talking with a cobra builder that hadn't progressed too far with the project.

On the immobilisers can anyone indicate if the AU's standard equipment meets these requirements? Also does this system tie into the car's key and ignition barrel or via some other means?

I ask this as I pick up my engine/box on Friday and am getting the ignition barrel thrown in but the car (wreck) didn't come with any keys. Its the smartlock/smartshield system I have already read about through this forum so am already wary.

Please explain!

Sticker on the imobiliser says...

Australian Standards Approved Imobiliser
AS/NZ 4601:1999

Re external boot/trunk hinges and other hardware try Don Pilling in Queensland.

Someone from Queensland will chime in with Don's details.

Got my hinges from the Healey Factory in Melbourne, along with Bullitt mirrors, tail lights, bonnet latches and headlight hardware.
Worth going down to have a look at some of the exotics they have for sale and on display as well.

I bought mine from the Healey Factory as well. Replacing the pitted ones that came with the car. Firstly a drop of super glue on the hinge pins is a good idea to stop the hinge pins from coming out. I lost two of them luckily on different ocassions. The Healey factory supplied replacement pins. The hinges are left and right hand side and they aren't exactly cut to the right angle to follow the body line of the Cobra. Make sure you use the gaskets provided. Because of the angle of the hinges there is a fair amount of stress on the fibreglass body when lifting the boot nearly vertical. To solve this I fibreglassed a strip of Aluminium about 60mm wide on the underside of the body to reinforce the area. The hinges are bolted throught the aluminium Works a treat. Hope this helps I learnt the hard way

Simple, use a smaller battery. 650 CCA should be plenty, unless you are going to start the car in the winter. Also saves about 15 lbs.

I used hinges of an Isuzu Bellet. Not as dainty as Healy hinges and don't stress the f/glass.
