Hi guys,

Thanks for the good oil........appreciate the advice!

Spoke to Kevin Humphries today.....an engineer in Wyong NSW. What a top bloke. Gave me his time to talk things over and was very patient with this WANABE.

Can anyone tell me what BHP you would expect from a 3 speed auto balanced 302 Windsor with billet cam and 600 Holley sitting on top? I know the emiisions ADR will most likley dictate fuel injection as the motor was built in '99.

Regards to all

Hi Wanabe
There are a lot of factors to consider. However the standard (around XD XE) 302 produced 140 kw and the 351 about 149kw at around 4500 rpm. With pistons 30 thou over and standard everything else plus the cam and holley you probably get 160-170kw (that's my best guess) in BHP that's about 215 to 230.
What do others think???

Aussie Mike 04-04-2006 02:48 AM

160-170KW well that'll fry the tyres (well one of them... Hopefully) :p

Come join the Dark Side. A stock standard LS1 will make 220-240KW at the rear wheels. :D

Wanabe 04-04-2006 06:51 AM

Ls1

Thanks again fellas..........

Aussie Mike.......I assume the dark side is the Lexus engine. Are the figures quoted the 4 litre V8?

If not what do you reckon the 4 litre produces.

The Dark Side is the Chev LS1, LS6, LS2 & LS7 Gen 3 aluminium small block V8 that runs from 5.3 litres up to It's 7.0 litres (Most popular is the 5.7L version).

As Far as the Lexus goes from what I've heard they make about 180KW at the crank in stock form. The great thing about them though is how they respond to a bit of forced induction. They have an excellent bottom end that's super strong and can cope with quite a bit of boost. A single or twin turbo Lexus will be a match for pretty much anything out there.

Cheers

Lexus 4lt in black Harrison I built with my brother John produced around 220rwhp in N/A form. That's stock engine with usual tweaks(good exhaust, cold air in etc)

Single T70 type turbo was fitted over xmas. Runs intercooler, extenal wastegate. At 7psi and conservative timings produced 322rwhp. Which is 240rwkw and over 300kw at the flywheels.

It's the torque that's most impressive - 465 ft lb(631Nm)

Not bad when you think it's a 4lt engine. Plus it had 140k+ on it when we bought it and has now already had a hard couple of years racing. Not exactly a fresh engine. But hey, it was very cheap, cheapest engine you can fit to a Cobra.

With 302w engines you can get up to 300rwhp with technology available today.

302w stroked to 347w and you can get over the 350rwhp mark.

Wanabe 04-04-2006 07:22 PM

What to do.........

Ok the Lexus sounds good.......400TT what was the cost to add the Turbo.

The 302 windsor seems the most common engine described as an "old push rod" which leaves me with the impression it's had its day.

So is it better to buy a mahine with the lexus or windsor?

The windsor appeals... keep the cobra closer to its roots etc. Was looking at a low klm 3 speed auto 302 with billet cam and 600 holley. But don't know what can be done and the cost to increase power.

Seen a straight, newer 4lt Lexus engine car.......$4k dearer

What to do.........**)

Hi Wanabe,

My understanding is that in NSW the Lexus (the ones you can afford)and 302 cannot be used as they dont meet current emission requirements. The LS1's (Gen 111 Holden) are oK for another two years (if you buy a 2004 or later) then you need the new 6 litre motor.

Talk to Kevin he knows the latest incarnations from the RTA.

Best idea is to join the Cobra Club and attend a few meetings . This way you will learn heaps and save many $$$$$

Phil:)

kobrah 04-05-2006 12:19 AM

Phil is right... Don't jump in! Go chat to the guys at your local cobra club. If you jump in you'll probably regret it later. But given the choice of the old 302 and the fuel injected lexus 4ltr with strong bottom end and big horse power potential. go the lexis.
%/ Did I just recommend against a FORD:confused:
That bloody dark side is strong:CRY: Must.... Resist....:JEKYLHYDE

This just for kobrah's info given he is from Queensland.

Firstly, don't get me wrong...the lexus is one very attractive package which can be made to put out some very respectable power in a cobra.

However, don't write off the windsor injected engines just yet. Some very interesting recent discussions with authorities imply that there may be some relief for the registration of ICV's in Queensland.

Let me tempt you a little further in saying that there will be little restriction in displacement of engine.

Very early days but things look very positive. Think IM240 for those in the know. :D

For now I need an already built machine and have been watching carpoint etc for quite awile, where there seems to be cars priced around my budget $45K...but they just sit with no one interested in them.

I am prepared to buy interstate and understand I will need to have the car blue slipped in NSW. BUT I really don't know what to look for with the ADR regs.

All help appreciated and if you know some one with a car that may suit my needs let me know.
