CR steering columm blues

I have just brought a steering cloumm for my CR .
The columm is off a MF Barina as suggested.
I have read that there is 2 different lengths of columm,
and that the shorter one is correct.
How can I tell if i have the correct columm ?
Thanks Paul

Paul,

I think we have all had problems with the steering column.

The issue is probably not the length, I think that is the same. What you need to check is the dimension between the bolt holes on the top mounting point.

I will try and post a pic of the two columns in my gallery, I have one of each and they are both easy to tell apart.

Cheers,

Ben

Paul,

The correct unit will have the top mounting holes (the ones closest to the steering wheeel) at 95mm centres. The incorrect unit will have those mounting holes at 130mm centres. I believe the lengths of the column are the same.

Paul,

As Churchy suggests its the mounting distance thats important.

There is a GTi version that has a cable running to the ignition switch, the cable is connected to the clutch pedal in the Barrina and must be depressed to start the engine (not a bad feature for a Cobra actually) Anyhow this can be easily disabled.

Yep thats pretty well 100 % success rate for us all getting the column wrong at least once....aint it fun.

Ohh and by the way I also have a hand brake assembly that is NOT an MGB early model one.

The one I have may very well fit something, but it certainly ain't gonna fit a Cobra :p :p

Hi All,

Can anyone tell me why the later model column cannot be used over the unit mentioned in the manual.
What are the differences between the two columns (apart from the upper mount measurments)?

I have altered the upper mounting bracket to suit the later unit and now wonder why everyone insists on the early unit. Are the dimensions between boss taper to upper mount to lower mount different between the two?

Gav, would you be able to measure both of them to see if all other measurements are the same and also the cowling shape? Could be I have stuffed up yet again.

Cheers,
Dale.

Hi Dale,
Don't quote me on this but I think the indicator stalk on the later model column is slightly longer and will foul on the door. Maybe someone who has tried both columns can comment further??

Also, does anyone have a wiring diagram for the Barina column they can post a picture of??
Luke.....

You are correct Luke.

If you look at the pic I posted the top mount is modified to be the correct distance. I still scrapped this one and got the newer column.

Sorry to jump in on the thread, Last year I asked if anyone had a spare steering shaft with uni from the Barina/swift, and sadly it appears the thread is one of the ones that was lost.
I have forgotten who it was that mentioned they had a spare and would send it through, I was just wondering if the offer still existed or should I be looking elsewhere?

Sorry for the poor memory

Boxhead,

I sent you the small shaft. Did you not get it?

It went in an airbag months ago????
