Engine fuel usage specs

Does anyone have data or know where to point me to get an idea of the fuel demand of the engine I am using. I ask as I am trying to source an in-tank pump option for my G-Force over the external 2 pump and pot option.

Am using a 5L 220kW Windsor from an AU2.

Biggest difficulty is trying to find a standard commercial pump/sender/swirl pot that will fit the 200mm tank depth of the G-Force tank. Think I am close with an XE-XE pump unit at 210mm depth but believe I will need to upsize the pump if not from a V8 model.

Can anyone help?

Cheers

We've got a guy up here running a Cobra with 5L engine out of a 2000ish GT.

He has fitted trickflow heads, inlet manifold etc etc.

He is just using VL Commodore fuel pump. Works perfectly. Apparently the 6cyl, v8's & turbo's ran the same pump. Well that's what the wreckers claim. I would check this though. His is just a 6cyl pump.

Cobra ran 12.7 1/4 mile the other day, so definitely no problems with fuel.

This could be a good, cheap way to go, until you decide to stroke, turbo or supercharge it. :D

Thanks Craig, your advice seems to match similar that I have heard but which is probably not confirmed to this point.

I need to get a stock pump with its own surge tank as my fuel tank is unbaffled yet I have seen a number of commodore pumps on ebay that have no surge tank around the pump at the end of the pick-up.

I can only presume that these car's tanks had inbuild surge protection of some kind.

Looked at the XD pump tonight and it is actually more like 220mm tall and the sealing lid is 130mm in diameter. So the pump's 20 mm taller than the tank and as my tank is ribbed for strength and only offers a 110mm wide flat entry width on top, the pump is also 20mm too large in diameter.

I have toyed with the idea of a side mount pump, as a lot of the holden pumps were designed to be fitted, but have yet to see a pump in its own surge tank. Side mounting may offer me greater flexibility in getting a pump to fit and be capable of scavenging of the bottom of the tank.

Can anybody suggest any other pump option?

Gee, you didn't mention you didn't have baffles. :(

Why don't you just get someone to cut some slots in the tank and slide in some baffles and weld.

With some baffles you could just use any pump. We know the VL pump has the capacity and is cheap.

The only time you will have problems is hard acceleration/corning when tank is low. Keep the tank full for all competition work and you will be fine. This is what we did we have old DRB Cobra. Once we got down to 1/4, that's when we started to have problems.

Personally the best solution is to use a low pressure lift pump, to an external surge tank and then high pressure EFI pump after that. But don't worry about fitting that initially, wait to after the car is finished and see if you need it. Less is sometimes better.
