Cobra The First 40 Years

Hi All

I received a catalogue from a local car book seller yesterday which featured the book "Cobra the First 40 Years" by Trevor Legate.
The price quoted was $199.00 plus about $7.00 postage. Just for the heck of it I searched the title on Google and found a site www.motorbooks.com. They have it at $US35.00 plus surface postage of $US11.95 for a total of $US46.95 or about $A64.50 at today's rates.

Now I'm all in favour of supporting local traders but this was too big a difference. It's not an urgent purchase for me so 8 week surface mail from the US is OK for me (air rates are prohibitive for a 288 page hard cover book).

If you are interested go to the website above. I noticed when I searched on "Cobra" on their site that they have a good range other than this book.

Isn't the cheap one the old version and the expensive one the new version?

Ralph_C 06-28-2006 05:53 PM

I got the new one from Amazon for US$35 (+ shipping, and I paid for express - about AU$80 all up) - arrived Tuesday this week - I am already well in to it - a great read (but the spelling is USA eg. liter, and it is a different cover to the UK version).

Also check this thread: Trevor Legate's New Book! - Trevor will get you a signed one for less than AU$200.

Craig: Cheap one is discounted price - old one is even more expensive (if it can be found).

I got mine tonight for $61.00 Canadian. Some great pics! Good stuff, Trevor!

Paid $31.50 a piece for two copies at Amazon. I one I'm going to read the other is a gift for a friend. $31.50 is a steal for the information contained in those pages. Hey Trevor, if I shipped you the book, would you sign it?

It's a steal alright!! But that's just my opinion.

I can and will sign if you so wish - send me an email
(t.legate@btinternet.com) and I will forward my address. The most economical way I can return it to you is via surface mail at £14, approx $25-ish dollars. The post quotes 3-4 weeks to the States but I have had packages arrive in 5-6 days. Its down to luck I guess.

I ordered my copy of "Cobra - The First 40 Years" from Amazon and am enjoying every bit of it. What a great piece of work.

I'm wondering, though, how it compares with Trevor Legate's two previous books on the subject - i.e., "Cobra" (ISBN 0854294244, Jul 1984) and "Cobra - The Real Thing!" (ISBN 1874105944, Oct 1994). Are these three books substantially different in terms of content, or is his latest book essentially an update of the previous two? I'm asking because I'm thinking about tracking down copies of the previous books for my collection.

Trevor Legate 07-24-2006 01:42 PM

I guess I feel qualified to reply - the book you have is totally new from start to finish (although it is the same long saga of course!!). The first book told the story up to 1983-ish while 'The Real Thing' is essentially the same book with a few new pics and a chapter added to take the story to 1993-ish.
For the latest book, I started over and only kept about 20 or so photos - out of the 300 - as I thought they were important enough to warrant using again (or - not leaving out). So you are safe buying either or both. Happy hunting.

So, the ending is still the same? 289 Cobras win the Manufacturers Championship in the new book too? ;)

Trevor Legate 07-25-2006 01:18 AM

No I copied the ending from a little book about sportscars I found in a bookshop recently - the 7-litre Cobras won the World Championship. Must be right, I read it there on the page....
Ah, but its so easy to be critical when its not your book, as 'Mr.Black' et al will tell you.....

I'm waiting for the movie version :D

BMK 07-25-2006 03:55 AM

Ok Trev. I'm on my way with a copy you just get that red wine out then we will both drink to that.

Mmmm do you want an agent here!!! Then again I'll sign it for you I've watched CS and can now sign his signature...

Trevor Legate 07-25-2006 05:06 AM

So it's you is it? I was wondering who it was who signed all that stuff - more than one man can manage in a lifetime. The truth is out and about time.
The red wine is ready and nice and warm so come on over - we are having an Aussie-style summer here (so we now have nothing to talk about) and its hotter than the south of France. Whoops sorry - I mentioned the 'F' word again...
And I would love to sell the film rights so an agent would be luvverly. Bidding starts at a modest $2mill. Tom Cruise can play me - we're about the same height(!)

BMK 07-26-2006 01:31 AM

Tev,

Since talking last I have been back to the States and had the opportunity to drive a GT40 across Route 66 to London Ohio for the event there.

Have also been riding a bicycle - mid life crisis I was told if I didn't get fit there would be no real crisis to worry about..

I was encouraged by the young man who stole my '66 Mustang off me. I take notice of everything he tells me to do as he is a good coach. Guess also due to the fact that he was 5th in the Tour de France last week..**)
