Lubrication

I am at the final stages of putting my car back together.

I need some advice on what oils/ fluids to use for a new engine and tko gear box.

I also would like to know what coolant is best when using an aluminium radiator.

Thanks

Phil

Advice I got

Phil,

A certain guy in Alice springs advised me this way. For the first 1,000 kms, use a mineral based oil, then change and use a synthetic based lubricant. Admittedly this was the advice for an LS1, but Boxhead did say that it applied to all engines.

Beejay may have some advice on what lubricants are to be used (or not) in a gearbox.

I will also be interested in the coolant answer as we are also going to use an aluminium radiator. Just in keeping with the power generating device. :D :D

Cheers

Yes,

I can confirm that if the person you bought your T56 gearbox does not use the correct fluid, you end up with a sizeable repair bill!

From what I understand gear oil is OK for older boxes but not the tremec.

Some gearboxes use normal gear oil, some use an SAE30 motor oil, and some even use ATF...

I used Redline Shockproof gearoil (lightweight) in the Torana's gearbox (Supra 5spd). The old Turdrunner completed hundreds of passes at the strip and a fair amount of street use using the Redline lubricant....

Redline Shockproof gearoil comes in heavy, lightweight and super light. I'd suggest the lightweight for the Tremec box.

Phil,

Dexron 111 for the Tremec.

Use the genuine GMH or Ford coolant .Probably the Ford as they run cast iron block with alloy heads and Radiator.

Stick with Castrol R for the engine.Bit heavier but gives top protection.

Regards,

Phil:) :)

Castrol Trans Max Z for the T56 6 speed. It's a Synthetic Dextron 3

Craig, We moved up to the North Coast a couple of years ago. I still read almost every thread however do not post much. I am responsible for 3 children now, the oldest is 3 and a half. I think i was about 15 years too early with my Cobra project...

We run Penrite Manual Gear Oil 75(was called Ultra Light) in the black Harrison. It has an old re-built Tremec 3550. Oil gets changed 2 -3 times a year due to all the racing.

Have tried the equivalent Castrol product, but the box didn't like it much.
