first cobra
I am looking at the options available for buying my first cobra. With long build times, I am considering buying a partially built car and have come across this one. The seller reckons they don't know much about the car so I am hoping someone out there will be able to identify the build and more importantly tell me if I am going to get it registered in Qld.

I could be mistaken but it looks like a Toyota Crown Chassis. Years ago there were a couple of builders making entry level kits based on the Crown chassis. A cheap way to build a Cobra but vehicle dimensions will be out and it won't handle as well as a bespoke chassis.

Just to throw my few cents worth in, it does look like a chassis from a crown (or something) this can be a good thing because you can use the regulations that apply to re-bodying a car (can use engine from same period) - make sure there is an identifying number. You should talk to an engineer about what would be required for rebody or ICV reg. As Mike said, the dimensions look a bit out (but only to us cobra nuts) and the handling wont be the same as some top notch chassis - but you get what you pay for and having said that you'll still be able to have a lot of fun with it. I recently met a guy with a crown chassis cobra and he has a blast in it. Take your time so you know what you want and have a realistic expecation of expense and some idea of the price/reward that suits you. Don't be afraid to miss a car like this - they come up often enough - you have to be in a place where you can say 'that suits me'. Good luck and have fun LoBelly |
Thanks guys - I think I will pass on this one but will certainly be staying in touch as I have found some of the comments on here to be most useful. Will keep looking for one, and will continue to follow discussions as I have picked up on a number of issues already

I've heard that there is no such thing as re-body now, well it in that sort of scale.
The guys doing Hummer bodies for Nissan Patrols etc now have to get them approved as ICV's. Ouch...now that's got to hurt. |
