power steering
hi guys,im wondering if its possible to put powersteering into drb kit if so which components should i use thanks

Gday Darrell - looks like no one has even thought of it perhaps on the drb. any owners like to comment. There has been very positive comments on the installation of P/S on the CR.

HI Darrell,
I have fitted power steering to my car and am very please with the result. You probably have a unique combo at the moment with a DRB with the Boss engine. I am not sure what problems you will face, my biggest hurdle was mounting and driving the pump. I found a way with a custom bracket and used the Diecrest 2 belt gilmer drive system, with everything it was heaps of work and everything was machined and reworked before they would fit. Good luck. I actually saw a DRB with power steering a couple of weeks ago down here in Vic. A bloody nice job done i might add too! It was subaru pump set up and the engine was a 351 windsor. The pump was hooked up via a custom bracket. But as Philm said it was a lot of work and alot of machined parts. I too am looking at going down the power sterring route as well eventually. Ill see what i can chase up re info on this from the guy. |
I want power steering to! Another strange combo though being DRB & a 4.6! I have always been told they (Cobras) are light in the steering once moving but pretty heavy at slow speeds. I reckon I'll have trouble steering it let alone the 1st soon to be wife (thanks Rebel1).

In my one drive of a classic revival - and I assume other makes would feel different - it wasnt an issue of the heaviess of the steering - its more about The excessive feedback (not sure if thats the best way to describe it) you get through the steering wheel. Havent driven a non P\S car since my first sigma 15 years ago though! :P

i would compare it to driving a torana with standard tyres not that heavy at all

Anti steering,
the main reason for the powersteer is as Andrew has said "excessive feed back".
I had a few instances when the car was understeering but when it found grip snaped the wheel back violently, and with the Mota Lita wheel it hooked my thumb and bent it back. Ouch:CRY: NOw the powersteering rack acts like a dampener, and this no longer happens. There was also a better wheel ratio, less turns from lock to lock, have you ever tried to quickly turn lock to lock, hitting your elbows on the sill. Not a very comfortable manouver. The very obvious improvement is in slow speed "parking" . I have found it to be really good on the track you are very relaxed driving not muscling it arround. After a dozon laps of wakefield you can really feel it in your shoulders, with the power steering it is easy. I recomend it, most modern race cars have powersteering. Phil |

I was thinking about it a few years back and didn't get around to it.
The best solution I found was: Castlemaine Rod shop did a PS conversion for Torana front ends. They used a Ford Cortina rack with modified steering arms and an electric PS pump from a Toyota MR2. |

Yes I have used an unmodified VL rack. The steering shaft takes a bit of fiddling, I have seen some others get a new shaft made trhat links the barina to the VL universal on the rack. Reptyl, I like the idea of the electric pump would have saved a lot of time and swearing. Phil |

thanks for all the feedback guys that gives me something to stew over,basically this is the time to find out about my options and build them /or not, into the car rather than once motor is in,,,again thanks for the replys
